Will A Liquid Diet Help Lose Weight – Throughout my career as a bariatric surgeon, I have seen hundreds of patients before bariatric surgery.
I explained to them all the requirements needed to be eligible for surgery and the only requirement that made them hesitate was the 2 weeks of liquid diet before the bariatric surgery.
Will A Liquid Diet Help Lose Weight
A pre-surgery liquid diet is nothing more than a low-carb, low-fat, high-protein diet. there is a lot of water. It is recommended to keep the number of calories between 600-1200 calories per day.

For more information on what to eat during these 2 weeks, see the link in my previous blog post below.
In this blog post, I will address seven reasons why many surgeons around the world recommend two weeks of “punishment” before surgery. Hopefully, after reading the post, all your questions about “Why Liquid Diet?” they answered.
The seven reasons are in no particular order. In my opinion, they are ALL important in different ways.
On a liquid diet before bariatric surgery, most patients will lose an average of 10-15 pounds. Remember that the main reason you have bariatric surgery is to lose weight.
Proven Ways To Lose Weight Without Diet Or Exercise
Low-carb, low-fat, high-protein, and low-calorie, this diet will start that process for you. The more weight you lose before surgery, the better.
Weight loss surgery for patients is always easy and has a low risk of complications. Any weight loss before the procedure is welcome.
The number of pounds you lose depends on your starting weight. The heavier you are, the more weight you should lose.
It also depends on your gender. Male patients are usually heavier than women. This is true for older women.

Muscle is the body’s calorie burning machine. Men tend to have more muscle mass than women and naturally have a higher metabolism.
Also, as you get older, you lose more muscle mass. Older patients need to work harder to lose excess weight.
If you want to increase your success before or after bariatric surgery, exercise. This brings us to reason #2.
During rapid weight loss, it is almost impossible to lose muscle mass. This is especially true after bariatric surgery.

One of the main ways that surgeons try to reduce the problem is to increase the protein during the meal.
Remember I said that the liquid diet before bariatric surgery is a high protein diet. Most surgeons recommend at least 60-80 grams of protein per day. This number depends on your weight and activity level.
If you exercise a lot, you need a higher level of protein in your diet. Consult your doctor and/or nutritionist to find out how many grams of protein you should be getting each day.
Patients with kidney and/or liver disease should monitor the amount of protein they consume, as it may affect their condition. If you are on dialysis or have cirrhosis of the liver, check with your doctor before starting a liquid diet before bariatric surgery.

Many patients, especially women, think that losing weight requires spending many hours on the car. Cardio is definitely important, but don’t forget to vary your workouts. Lift weights a few times a week to maintain and gain muscle mass.
Work large muscle groups, such as the glutes and back muscles. Use muscle tension to your advantage by alternating between cardio and weight training.
If you are overweight, you may not need additional weights. Use your own body weight. Squats, push-ups, pull-ups, jumps, lunges and other exercises can be done only with your own body weight. Start slow and work up.
Reason number three, in my opinion, is the most important. As you gained weight, your liver grew with you. You see, it’s called fatty liver disease.

The problem with an enlarged liver during bariatric surgery is that your surgeon may not be able to complete the operation.
The stomach is located below the liver. During the operation, your bariatric surgeon will lift your liver up to your stomach to shrink it so you can lose weight.
If your liver is very enlarged, the surgeon may not be able to reach your abdomen. I saw two patients during my residency at the University of Florida in Gainesville, before a liquid diet, who had to stop surgery because of an enlarged liver.
Just 2 weeks on a low-fat, low-carb, high-protein, low-calorie diet has been scientifically proven to reduce your liver size by at least 25 percent.

So, don’t take any chances. Stick to your diet and your surgery is more likely to go as planned.
After weight loss surgery, your fluid intake will continue. There will be some changes, but for the most part, a liquid diet for 1-2 weeks after surgery is the standard of care. We want your diet and communication to heal properly after surgery. You don’t want to eat solid food too soon and break one of those bonds. This can damage your result.
Your diet will gradually improve over about 6 weeks. Please follow the guidelines provided by your bariatric surgery program.
Following a liquid diet before surgery will teach you what to eat after surgery. Hopefully, you’ve developed a better understanding of the portions, calories, and nutrients in your meals.
Liquid Diet For Weight Loss? Liquid Diets Create A Calorie Deficit Which Can Result Into Diabetes
After the operation, it is likely that you will not be hungry, so the portion of liquid food should be easier.
You want to keep your mind or awareness on the next step in your diet after surgery. This new eating habit will help you lose weight, but most importantly, keep it off.
About 25% of patients who undergo bariatric surgery will regain some or all of the weight. It is because of lack of thinking, lack of discipline or self-control. Bariatric surgery is just a tool to help you lose weight.
I mentioned this briefly above, but hunger is a problem at the beginning of a liquid diet before bariatric treatment. Don’t worry, your body will ADAPT.
Liquid Recipes For Weight Loss Or Post Surgery Diet
You will be hungry, especially the first few days on a liquid diet before bariatric surgery. Your body is very smart and will stop craving the junk food you ate.
The main reason the body craves sweets, sodas, or junk food is because you give it to them. If you stop eating Coca-Cola or Krispy Kreme donuts, the craving will go away after a few days. Think about cocaine addicts, they want cocaine because they give their bodies cocaine. Hopefully you don’t crave cocaine because you haven’t given your body cocaine. If you try it, you will want to have it again.
We are built to adapt. Adaptability is one of the main reasons why people succeed in so many things. We adapt, we pivot, we can use our brains differently. Food is no different.
The diet will be difficult at first, all the patients will tell me that the first 3-4 days are difficult, but they did it all.

Some more active patients will complain of feeling weak. This is especially true if you live on a very low calorie diet. If this is the case, you may need to slow down your calorie intake until you no longer feel tired. Remember that you have to give your body some fuel to perform the functions you need. Use fuel properly, not CARBage. Focus on protein to fuel your body for two weeks.
Back in 2009, during my senior residency, I had a laparoscopic gastrectomy with one of my instructors. We did it right and the patient had absolutely no problems, but there is a lot that can go wrong with the patient because of his non-compliance with the diet.
During the operation, we noticed that the patient’s stomach was bigger and heavier than usual, but we divided the stomach without any problem. At the end of the experiment, we did a regular exercise to evaluate the hand and check for the text. An endoscopy is putting a camera through your mouth into your stomach so we can see inside your stomach.
You are kidding. The patient risked his life for a piece of chicken before the operation. Nothing happened to the patient, but the main thing here is not to do it.
Medically Managed Weight Loss
Apparently, this patient was a sleeper and the night before the operation he went to the refrigerator and ate some leftover Chinese food with chicken and broccoli.
We need you to breathe clean. Old food in the stomach will increase the risk. It also increases the number of bacteria in your gut, increasing your chances of getting infections.
Plus, you’ll feel good knowing you’re putting your best foot forward. yes
