As a nutritionist, I recommend eating at least one meal per day with a plant-based protein source. See my chart below for more details.

Most plant-based sources are incomplete, meaning they lack certain amino acids, but quinoa and soy (tofu and edamame) are complete proteins.
Also, if you incorporate other sources of plant-based protein into the day, you’re more likely to get all nine essential amino acids.

It is clear that following a plant-based diet can reduce the risk of heart disease. But do all plant-based diets have the same effect? Do you really need to cut out all the meat for your heart?
“For heart safety, it’s important to focus on the quality of plant foods in your diet, and you can benefit from reducing animal products without eliminating them completely from your diet,” Dr. Ambika Satija says. Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public
There are many types of plant-based diets, but they all emphasize specific foods associated with heart health, such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and oils such as olive oil. Diets most studied for their effects on the heart include the Mediterranean diet, the DASH diet, and the MIND diet. These foods contain fiber, vitamins, and minerals, which help lower blood pressure and LDL (bad) cholesterol, reduce the risk of diabetes, and maintain weight, all of which reduce the risk of heart disease.
However, the types of plant foods and their sources are important. For example, white rice and white bread are plant-based foods, so you think it’s good to eat them. But they’re highly processed and lack many heart-y nutrients and have a high glycemic index, meaning they can spike blood sugar and increase hunger, leading to overeating.
The Right Plant Based Diet For You
Drinking 100% fruit juice is not the same as eating whole fruit, as the juice is high in sugar and can squeeze out valuable fiber and vitamins. And many canned plant foods are loaded with fat, sodium, and sugar.

Another question concerns the human appetite for animal products. When it comes to your mind, isn’t animal food on the table? Probably not – if you’re smart about your choices.
, examined dietary information from nearly 209,000 adults (of whom 43,000 were men) over two decades. Researchers compared the risk of heart disease raised by these three categories of plant-based diets:
This One Diet Can Improve Your Heart Health, New Study Says — Eat This Not That
Not surprisingly, they found that people who followed a plant-based diet (the second group) had a lower risk of heart disease. They were more active and slimmer. On the other hand, those who follow an inappropriate plant-based diet (the third group) have a higher risk of heart disease.
Therefore, the study found that a reduction in animal foods is more cardioprotective than a plant-based diet.
Although this study did not examine whether animal foods, particularly meat, affect the heart, other research shows that, as with plant foods, type and quantity are most important.
It found that eating 3 ounces of unprocessed red meat three times a week did not worsen blood pressure or total cholesterol levels.
Five Health Benefits Of A Plant Based Diet
However, a 2014 study by the American Heart Association found that men aged 45 to 79 who ate 75 grams or more of processed red meat per day, such as cold cuts, sausage, bacon, and hot dogs, had a 28% higher risk of heart disease. Disease was a failure compared to men who ate less than 25 grams.
Need another reason to start your day with a hearty breakfast? Doing so can lower your risk of atherosclerosis, according to a study Oct. 10, 2017.
More than 4,000 adults without heart disease or chronic kidney disease were divided into three groups: those who consumed less than 5% of total energy in the morning (they skipped breakfast or drank only coffee or juice); those eating more than 20% (high-energy breakfast consumers who eat a diet high in whole grains and fruit); Consume between 5% and 20% (low-energy breakfast consumers who consume foods such as roast or pastries and coffee).
About 28% ate a high-energy breakfast, about 70% ate a low-energy breakfast, and 3% skipped breakfast. Breakfast eaters were 1.5 to 2.5 times more likely to develop atherosclerosis, while those who ate a low-energy breakfast were 1.15 times more likely.
Potential Risks Of A Vegan Diet (one Is Irreversible)
Which plant-based diet is right for you? You don’t have to go completely vegan or vegetarian (eliminate all animal products, even eggs and milk) to get the best heart benefits. The focus should be on eating more of the right plants, avoiding the wrong kinds, avoiding processed foods, and limiting consumption of animal products.
A heart-y diet doesn’t have to be stressful. “For many men, it may be a matter of changing their current diet,” Dr. Called Satija. For example, replace white rice with brown rice or other grains, and replace white bread with whole grain bread. Opt for oatmeal instead of processed grains and water instead of juice drinks.
If adopting a completely plant-based diet seems daunting, start small. “A modest change in your diet, reducing your animal feed intake to once or twice a day, replacing legumes or nuts as your protein source, can have a lasting positive effect on you,” Dr. Called Satija.
