Help with my depression. It made perfect sense to me at the time. Animals have hormones and general hormones are rare. So why not eliminate those extra hormones from my diet and see if that helps. At that time I was willing to try anything. I started to jump start eating only plant foods and as time went by I was getting more and more worried about how I was going to get meat back into my diet if I decided to continue.
Transitioning To Pescatarian Diet
After a few weeks in, I saw an undeniable fatigue. I couldn’t get out of bed and had trouble working. I added nutritional yeast and B vitamins to my diet, which helped a little, but I felt like I was missing out on the nutrients my body needed. After talking with my doctor, we decided it would be best to add more eggs and seafood to my diet. Things have gotten better, but my anxiety isn’t lessening at all.

I’ve been toying with the idea of reintroducing meat into my diet for a while. But as I read and talked to friends who had made the same transition, I became scared. Some people get very sick, while others have no problems and actually feel better when they eat meat again. I’m usually the 1 in 10 people who suffer from psychotic symptoms, so the idea of eating chicken and lying in the bathroom doesn’t sound like something I want to do at all. So I put it away.
But last week I put on my big pants and asked for a bite of Super Dad’s grilled chicken for dinner. It’s funny. I plucked the smallest chicken I could. I held him. I looked at him. I wondered if I had made the right decision. I had to spend 10 minutes before I got this little chicken in my mouth and I swallowed it.
I’m not sure what I’m waiting for. Stomach ache? Heartbreak? Who knows. I thought my body would rebel against this strange thing, even though I drank it religiously for over 38 years before one day I decided to stop.
Nothing happened. There is no doubt. It took me a while to get over it and remember that I wasn’t consuming anything legal or illegal, but once I did, I was pretty good. One bite operation completed.
The Plant Based Diet
The next night I ate a larger chicken for dinner and experienced side effects that didn’t exist.
Every little bit of research I’ve done says one thing… start slow and start with the chicken. Once you’re sure your recipe is good with chicken, move on to turkey. Do the same with the pork and finally the beef. Slowly exercising your body will be easier on your system. To this day, I have managed to eat chicken three times without any side effects. I’m going to try the turkey this week.
While eating meat is not for everyone, I have decided that reintroducing it is the best thing for my health. If you decide to reintroduce meat into your diet, here are some useful tips I’ve collected.

There is a common misconception that vegetarian food is difficult to find and vegetarians always have to go to specialty health stores to get what they need. This is not necessarily true. Much depends on your location, but in most major cities even your average supermarket will have vegan alternatives at regular prices. I live in Copenhagen and even the smallest shop sells milk these days. However, if you’re looking to save, it’s definitely worth checking out your local grocery stores, farmers markets and finding the best options for grocery shopping.
Unfortunately, many people these days will question your decision and this will make you question yourself. Therefore, it is very important not to give in to people’s bitter comments and judgments about you based on your diet or lifestyle.
You have to keep your reason and hold fast to it. At first, you may want to avoid arguing about your decision and feel the need to explain yourself. The truth is, you don’t have to reveal yourself to anyone, and it’s important to always be careful.
Different Types Of Plant Based Diets
Remember why you are doing it – for the animals. In the beginning, you’ll want to try to have at least one vegetarian friend (count on the line!) so you have support. Try joining twitter or other facebook groups for support. I recommend finding out if there is a vegan Facebook group for your city and joining once you’ve decided to go vegan.
In the first few months, you want to have a full refrigerator. Of course, this is not necessary, but I think it is especially helpful when it comes to taste. In the beginning, you need access to a variety of flavors and fatty foods to satisfy your cravings. If you develop a craving for chocolate, it is very helpful to be able to eat vegan chocolate at home and avoid going back to old habits.
A lot of people can tell you to eat healthy, but I think when you’re transitioning to a vegan lifestyle, it’s important not to feel like you’re missing out on too much. Enjoy vegan ice creams, vegan pizzas and anything else you like, you can worry about your food a little later.
One of the most important things to do when planning a vegan diet is to gather a variety of recipes and food ideas that are similar to what you currently eat.
