There is a time and a place to love food. Of course it is. We all love food. But if you’re training for a bikini contest or dieting, find other things in life that fill the void. Don’t let it be your food.

My goal is always to hit 1200 calories a day, which gives me some wiggle room for impulsive, mindless eating. Generally, I get 1500 calories at the end of the day.

Regardless, I think it’s so helpful to have a plan for 1200 calories and let the rest of the food be unplanned. Although I don’t always eat the same thing every day, there is usually a variation of the meals.

Most mornings, I’ll sit down with MyFitnessPal and log the foods I’ll eat for the day until my calories and macros match my goals.

This week my goals are to plan for a daily goal of 1200 calories with high protein and low carbs. The low-fat part comes naturally, because I prefer low-fat foods.

A low-calorie diet has been shown to lead to weight loss despite macro distribution. However, for the 1200 calories of high protein, low carb, low fat, the totals are: 1151 calories / 153 g protein, 86 g carbs, 16 g fat. If you count the macros, it’s close to: 55% protein, 30% carbs, and 15% fat.

When I make meal plans focused on calories, I meal plan in a way where the calories are slightly under rather than over. I refer to planned calories for several reasons.

First, it is difficult to get accurate measurements for the calories in the foods you eat. Different tools, different reporting methods and different products are different in calorie range.

But the biggest reason why the plan is just under 1200 calories is that there are a lot of things that we eat that often go unnoticed. Bites, nibbles, dips, vegetables, vitamins, gummies, and even sugar-free foods actually have calories.

So at the end of the day, you’ll probably be closer to 1200 calories, even if you think you’re eating less.
