A year ago I decided to start a low carb keto diet. And the years have passed! There were ups and downs along the way, but overall I’m so glad I took that important first step and started my keto diet journey a year ago.

A year ago today I was in a very unhealthy place. I knew I needed to change my eating habits, and after hearing about the keto diet, I decided to learn more and fell in love with the way I eat it.

So, in the first six months of my journey, I jumped head first into a new way of eating without cheating.

After a year of your weight loss journey, you can expect to see staggering figures. But my journey was slow and steady, and I tried really hard not to compare my weight loss to others.

While there are so many health benefits associated with dramatically changing your diet, it can be difficult to quantify a year in terms of numbers. Along with losing weight, I feel so much better in so many ways, from healthy nails and hair to better sleep. All this is due to changes in diet.

If you are curious about the total number, I lost 17 kg in the first 6 months, after that I added a few more kg and dropped to 14.5 kg.

Keto For Weight Loss: Does It Really Work?

I’ve been through many plateaus over the years. Long plateaus can be frustrating, and in the keto community, we’ve found that plateaus meet the need to be strict with fat fasting or egg fasting.

I personally like to breathe without thinking about losing weight and come back when I’m in a more positive head because everything I do for myself puts me in a chaotic eating spiral. Everyone is different and that’s what works for me.

Over the course of a year I’m trying to adjust my snacking habits and become more intuitive about what and when I eat. With keto, I found that I wasn’t as hungry as I used to be, so I ate far fewer snacks and listened more carefully to my hunger signals.

Looking at the before and after photos, I can’t believe it’s the same person! (I promise!) My overall look is different. Not only is he gaining weight, but he is also much calmer and happier.

The change is amazing. My skin, eyes, hair and nails are all healthier than I remember.

It was my birthday a few weeks ago and I took a comparison photo (see above!). When you compare last year’s birthday and this year’s birthday, it’s like you’ve aged backwards!! (If that’s true and it continues!)

Many of my meals are still keto, but I am no longer in ketosis or a strict keto diet. I’m hooked on the 16/8 Intuitive Diet, which I’ve been doing for a month now, and will stick with it for now. More on this in this post.

Overall, it was a surprisingly positive year. I haven’t lost as much weight as I thought I would, but I’m proud of the positive changes I’ve made to my health.

I don’t even want to think where I would be today if I hadn’t started my keto diet. I am grateful for what I did and look forward to where it will take me next year.

I have experienced both cases. In 2008, I went to Mexico on a university summer exchange program for a month, and at school I ate at a set time every day, ate too much fast food, and filled my stomach with tequila and Corona. But by the end of the journey I had lost weight. Part of me wanted to believe that the stress of living abroad and eating non-Asian food made me lose weight.

I went to India in 2011 and it was a very challenging country for a month. I got sick with food poisoning. As a result, choices about safe foods to eat are limited. In the end, I returned home thinner than before the trip.

Apart from the two extremes above, in my other travels, I have seen people bring home extra kilograms in the form of body fat after the trip. Usually when traveling for a short period of time (less than two weeks), you eat a lot. Perhaps I was unconsciously trying to make the most of my limited vacation time. Maybe you’re afraid of missing out. You might be delighted with how much good food you can buy with SGD currency. My habit of eating too much.

Year Weight Loss Results

My habit of overeating continues at home and in everyday life. I ate high calorie food with sugary drinks every morning, lunch and dinner. In July 2015, I decided to train for a marathon to lose weight. On training days, I ate a lot to get more energy. I didn’t lose much weight through training. After all, I didn’t think I was overweight, but my BMI was weird.

In October 2015, my boyfriend and I discussed getting married in a year or two. When talking about a wedding, the first thing that comes to mind is, “Which wedding dress should I go with?” This anxiety is strong enough to make you binge eat. I realized that I have to make a conscious effort to lose weight. I had no money to go abroad and live in hopes of losing weight for a month, I couldn’t afford it, I had a full time job and had rent/utilities to pay.

I came across a blog article that inspired me to push the button on Runner’s Beans. This diet was very easy. I was able to eat as much as I wanted without much exercise. But more concrete evidence was needed that this diet worked. Lionel of the happy egg successfully did it and lost 5 kg, but unfortunately bounced back. One of my favorite authors, Tim Ferris, author of The 4 Hour Workweek and The 4 Hour Body, has a powerful article showing transformation photos of people who have lost 100 pounds. I’m sold! Thought I’d give it a try. But I was training for a full marathon and I was afraid that dieting would completely change my performance.

On October 25, 2015, my boyfriend and I went to a close friend’s house function. We ate a lot there. Even my friends joked that I couldn’t believe that I could eat so much more food than my friends. I am generally resistant to sarcastic jokes from close friends. In defense, I told myself that marathon training requires a lot of food anyway. But I can’t lie that I’m really worried about wearing my wedding dress. On the bus ride home that evening, I explained to my boyfriend about the low-carb diet and the positive results I had seen in the article above. He also shared his concerns about marathon training. He encouraged me to start dieting soon. That night we bought the ingredients for our meal. The diet started on October 26, 2015. And they say the rest is history.
