Eating healthy, tasty snacks between meals is a great way to control hunger and helps you make healthy meal choices. Additionally, snacking is a great way to get more fruits and vegetables into your day, which are very important on a kidney diet.
Walk down the snack aisle at your local grocery store and you will find a wide range of snacking options. However, if you have chronic kidney disease (CKD), it is better to avoid certain ingredients in breakfast foods.

If your lab shows high levels of potassium, it’s a good idea to pay attention to how much potassium you’re eating. A low-potassium breakfast contains less than 200 milligrams (mg) of potassium per serving.

It’s a good idea to look for ingredients that also contain potassium! Potassium supplements add extra (highly absorbable!) potassium to your breakfast. They are particularly common in “low-sugar” or “sugar-free” products.
Also, do not forget about phosphorus. In general, you don’t have to worry about natural phosphorus found in grains, beans, legumes, and vegetables. It is phosphorus added to foods that should be limited.

If you choose pre-popped popcorn, remember to read the label and look for “low-sodium” or “light” versions. Skinny Pop* is my favorite store-bought popcorn with only 75mg of sodium per 4 cups!
You can always find grapes in the grocery store. This year-round fruit is not only delicious, but packs a ton of nutrients in a small package.
These cute fruits are kid friendly too! A 1/2 cup of grapefruit has just 2 milligrams of sodium, 144 milligrams of potassium, and 15 milligrams of phosphorus.
