First, we presented the minimally processed foods commonly encouraged on the Paleo diet in the “Eat More” section. If you’re a Paleo purist, you’ll want to choose most (or all) of your foods from that category.

Here’s a quick reference guide to what’s considered paleo and what’s not. In general, a balanced paleo diet includes foods rich in protein and fiber that are not derived from grain products, and excludes carbohydrates, refined sugars, and heavily processed foods.

For most people, the Paleo diet calls for significantly increasing their average protein intake. According to paleo expert Lorraine Corden, protein intake is only 15% of calories in a typical Western diet.

Meat and seafood are considered staples of the Paleo diet, which greatly increases the average person’s protein intake. This lists some of the high protein meats you can have on the paleo diet.

Be adventurous with different cuts and meats (even organ meats!) to discover your favorites, and remember: happy animals make happy meat! Opt for grass-fed and wild-raised meats whenever possible, and avoid processed meats.
