Paleo Diet Before After 30 Days – The whole story of my healing journey from childhood obesity to living with an autoimmune disease as a teenager. How AIP and Keto Helped Me Reach My Goals; Relieve my autoimmune disease and get strong AF!

Where do I start? How long should it be? I often share fragments of my story and have yet to put it all together like this. Two reasons for this, it’s multifaceted, it’s not simple and there are a lot of tangents, two, do you really care? To read it all, to know from the beginning… Here… Although this story highlights my struggles, I want to say that my life is not this sob epic story. Isn’t this life, real life, light and dark? I want to share my story, to tell you how AIP and keto and self-love changed my life forever, in the hope that it inspires, motivates or teaches you.

I have been overweight for as long as I can remember. Even as a child I was bigger than my older sister and I used to eat more than her. However, as a child, you didn’t know you were fat or that society wouldn’t accept you until someone made it clear to you. I don’t remember the exact moment, but I know it happened at some point. I’ve been in tears coming home from school since third grade.

Even earlier, my happy childhood was marked by illness. Hospitalized with pneumonia at 8 months. Chronic bronchitis, strep throat relapse. I remember inhalers and antibiotics. A fever that burns me in a cold sweat. I was so sick… I took Dimetop and the grapes tasted like Jolly Ranchers. Mineral oil spoon and rectal suppository for severe constipation.

We don’t know then, no one has seen health this way, but even when the child comes out of my lower ears, nose and throat from one end to the other I call the flowing bowels a health problem. I was probably a combination of a C-section birth, soy formula, and a full complement of vaccines. It could be my family’s predisposition to antibiotics and autoimmunity. I may have inherited stress from my grandmother and mother who lived in a communist country and fled. Whatever the reason, of all the children in our family, I was the most damaged.

Fast forward to being a teenager with complete self-esteem issues, body dysmorphia, and grief I can’t explain. Wanting people to love me, I would take the shirt off my back for anyone. Although many remember me as optimistic, high-energy, and happy, I always felt disconnected, an outsider, wanting, and unsure. Now I know it was all in my head. I have lived with this filter all my life and it has been the source of many conflicts.

The source goes to my mind or is self-medicated. I steal leftovers and snacks and open the fridge and eat before someone catches me. I eat my plate and the rest my sister, I eat whole food all the time. My mom wanted to help me, so she did it the only way she knew how. As a starving dieter we do these diets together.

I would say my mom’s cooking skills and her love for real food are a bonus, at least our diet doesn’t consist of shakes or frozen meals. However, for a week on the South Beach Diet all we ate was chicken and lettuce.

This pattern of ultra-restriction (and rapid weight loss) and falling off the wagon in some epic way certainly messed up my metabolism and hormones.

Add to that 10 years of heavy drinking, cigarettes and some common drug use. Oh boy! I wish I could go back and say 16 or 18, my 23 year old self SSSSTTTAAAPPPP IT. This girl is very sad. Emotional and physical. Navigating social gatherings, beach days, boat parties, flirting, intimacy, sex, and low self-esteem, body issues, and my hidradenitis suppurativa was frustrating.

Trying to hide my body fat, my scars, the horribly painful claws of my autoimmune disease, being intimate or showing parts of my body is a terrible thought. I was numb with substance abuse. I didn’t talk to anyone about my skin condition except my mom, sister and a few doctors until I got married and even then, I hid a lot of my pain and scars. I’m like a duck. It looks like it’s wading through a pond while furiously kicking under the surface.

There is a way to focus on pregnancy, childbirth, and motherhood. I stopped giving an F about hiding my HS from my husband because it only got worse. Too bad. I’m not sure if it’s the sleepless nights, the hormones and the emotional rollercoaster, stress of motherhood. But while my body fat continued to increase, my health declined. When we moved to Hawaii and I weaned my son after breastfeeding for two years, I was at an all-time low.

Swollen, depressed, sore, tired and worn out at 29 years old I went to the internet for answers and found an article by Tara Grant on Rob Wolf’s website. She has the same skin condition as me and found relief through diet. He talked a lot about nightshades. I bought his book, The Hidden Plague.

Knowing that this disease was autoimmune, that it wasn’t my fault, and that I could do something about it was the most empowering moment of my life. However, the journey was not smooth, it was like climbing a steep mountain and windy road. Hidradentitis suppurativa is a mystery, and it’s hard to find relief and relief! So many factors at play.

Add to this huge goal the need to lose weight, get fit and healthy and I have a big job to do!

Whole30 Diet: Is It Actually Healthy?

I started studying as best I could. I researched nightshades, increasing my knowledge of paleo. This leads me to the door AIP (Autoimmune Protocol). I won’t lie, it scared me. It seemed absolutely impossible. Spices, eggs, coffee, and nuts…how the hell? Remember back then, even though I was gluten free and mostly dairy free I still ate grains and potatoes and all tomatoes and peppers!

However, I was curious, and I knew in my heart that this was what I had to do. My 30th

My birthday is coming up and I decided to start with Whole30. It seemed more doable. I consciously reduced my nightshade intake and did it for 30 days. It’s amazing. I lost 13 pounds with the first Whole30 and felt so much better that my depression started to lift. So I stuck with Paleo all summer and finally, this fall I committed to doing AIP.

Yes, it took me about three months to collect the gravel I found in my first AIP. I finally realized that even though I ate paleo, with the occasional wine, and nightshades, my skin didn’t improve at all. Time to get serious about my health.

Life After The Paleo Challenge

AIP is a lot of effort. An elimination diet that excludes all grains, dairy, gluten, beans, nuts, seeds, eggs, processed foods, and nightshades. I started AIP as described in Tara Grant’s book, which is coffee and cashews until you see progress. When I saw some progress, eventually, I gave up coffee and cashews as well. I saw more progress. I kept a very detailed journal. Time, date: I ate. How I felt immediately 24 hours after eating this meal and any notes. I connect to symptoms, sleep, stress.

I’m glad I kept the journal. It’s hard to quantify my progress. I still suffer from some fatigue and I have moments of doubt, frustration because my hidradenitis is not completely relieved. I cry a lot. But when I look at the bigger picture I realize that my rockets are further apart and they are smaller. Lasts only 1-3 days as opposed to weeks or months.

I added coffee, eggs, wine, then nuts and seeds, one food at a time. At the end I also added ghee. I’ve never tried adding gluten or nightshades because touching these foods makes my hands itch, and I’ve had a complete reaction when I accidentally eat these foods.

In those first 6 months, I lost 35 pounds. I started exercising. I started liking the exercises. Zumba, HIIT, weight lifting, jumping jacks. I’m on a roll. Then something happened…
