Risk factors related to diet and physical inactivity are the main risk factors for disability and are responsible for a large part of the burden of chronic non-communicable diseases. Dietary Guidelines (FBDG) are useful tools for nutrition policy and public health strategies to promote healthy eating and physical activity. In this article we comment on the process followed in the development of the Dietary Guidelines for the Spanish people by the Spanish Community Nutrition Association (SENC) and we explain more about the collaboration with primary care providers as presented in the context of the SENC NUTRIMAD 2018 International Congress. From the health in all policy approaches, the SENC convened a meeting of nutrition and public health experts to examine the evidence on healthy diet, nutrient intake and consumption in the Hispanic population, as well as food preparation, limitation, and outcomes Impact of diet on the environment. sustainability The collaborative team drafted the document and designed the graphic icon, which was then subject to a process of consultation, discussion and quality assessment. Next, a collaborative team was set up to develop a strategic dissemination plan in which delegates from all primary health care science societies in Spain participated. Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes are the main causes of disability, illness and premature death in the European Union (EU) and the world. There is a huge social and economic cost. [1]. In the EU, it is estimated that the leading cause of death, healthcare costs are largely due to the fact that NCDs cause the EU economy to lose 0.8% of GDP annually [2].

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), “a sustainable diet is one that has a low environmental impact, contributes to food security and nutrition and a healthy lifestyle for the current generation. And the future” [3] Therefore, a sustainable diet is culturally acceptable, fair and accessible protection and respect for biodiversity and ecosystems. In addition, such a diet is nutritious, safe and healthy. At the same time it optimizes natural and human resources. In this framework, the sustainability of the diet does not only focus on nutrition and the environment, but also on the economic and socio-cultural dimension.

The food choices that shape diets affect the needs of agricultural production, but the agricultural system is part of a larger food system that includes the production, processing, production and distribution of food to consumers. A sustainable food system is essential to achieve a healthy and sustainable diet [4]. Also, Dernini et al. [5] Significant efforts have been made to define the many dimensions and benefits of the Mediterranean diet as a sustainable diet and establish a framework (Mediterranean Diet 4.0) that represents the four sustainable benefits of the Mediterranean diet: significant health and nutritional benefits, low environmental impact and biodiversity, high socio-cultural food prices and positive local economic benefits.

The United Nations and the World Health Organization (WHO) have set nine global targets for NCDs by 2025 [ 6 ]. In line with this, Sustainable Development Goal 3.4 aims to reduce premature death from non-communicable diseases by a third and improve mental health and well-being by 2030 [7]. Diet-related risk factors and physical inactivity are the main risk factors for disability and are responsible for a large part of the burden of chronic non-communicable diseases worldwide [ 8 ]. Providing evidence-based guidance for healthy diet and lifestyle patterns can play an important role in public health [9]. An intersectoral and policy-based approach is needed to address NCDs with a focus on prevention [6]. The Dietary Guidelines (FBDG) are useful tools for nutrition policy and public health strategies to promote healthy eating and physical activity [ 10 , 11 ]. They serve as a way to raise awareness and provide the public with evidence-based diet and lifestyle advice to health professionals, policy makers and others using understandable language. Food-based dietary advice is often combined with visual representations to help raise consumer awareness [ 10 , 11 ]. In this article, we discuss the processes followed to develop dietary guidelines for the Spanish population by the Spanish Association of Community Nutrition (SENC, Annex A) and further explain the collaboration with primary care providers, as discussed in the Context of NUTRIMAD 2018 International. Congress of the Spanish Community Nutrition Association.

Food-based dietary guidelines are defined as science-based guidelines in the form of guidelines for healthy eating [ 10 , 11 ]. They are easy-to-understand documents aimed at consumers as well as policy makers, health professionals, the food industry and educational purposes [10, 11]. To be relevant to the target audience, FBDGs should be appropriate for a region or country that is culturally acceptable, easy to accept, and include practical advice [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ]. Issues related to the target population, such as food habits and dietary patterns, nutrient sources, and health patterns, should be taken into account when developing FBDGs [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ]. In addition, food production, distribution costs and access to the countries or regions involved are also important in the development process, as well as food beliefs, preferences, culinary practices, stomach culture and other relevant factors. . They intend [12, 13]. Of course, for a better accession, in the case of Spain, it is important to take into account the food production structure of the Mediterranean, which has a real food tradition, but also an abundance of food and a rich food culture. In the country [13 ]. , 14].

The concept of FBDG, as published by FAO/World Health Organization (WHO), is more than 25 years old [10]; In the past, guidelines for disease prevention and nutrient intake covered the process of developing dietary guidelines [15]. FBDGs are now recognized as an important tool for nutrition policy [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ]. Promoting a sustainable diet through FBDGs is part of a strategy to achieve the goals of sustainable development [13]. To date, several countries have taken a more holistic approach to FBDGs, including messages about including food as a dietary model, food security issues, lifestyle and sustainability aspects in their FBDGs [ 13 ]. In addition, in recent years, many countries have developed guidelines to promote and protect traditional food cultures and consider the impact of dietary patterns and food systems on the environment [ 13 , 16 , 17 ].
