One of the most important habits for successful weight loss is meal planning. It doesn’t have to be complicated, and it’s a great way to set yourself up to stick to your calories. (You can read my weight loss story here)

Most mornings, I sit down with MyFitnessPal and enter the foods I eat for the day until the calories and macros match my goals.

This week, my goals are designed for a daily goal of 1200 calories with high protein and low carbs. I like low fat foods so the low fat part comes naturally.

Regardless of the macroscopic distribution, a low-calorie diet has been shown to lead to weight loss. However, this 1200 calorie serving is high in protein, low in carbs and low in fat: 1151 calories / 153 grams of protein, 86 grams of carbs, 16 grams of fat. If you do the macro calculations, it’s closer to: 55% protein, 30% Carbohydrates and 15% fat.

When I plan calorie-targeted meals, I plan to be calorie-reduced. I go to Planned Calories for a few reasons.

One, it’s hard to get accurate measurements for the calories in the foods you eat. Different devices, different reporting methods and different products vary in calorie range.

But the biggest reason the plan is under 1200 calories is because most of what we eat goes unnoticed. Bites, nibbles, sauces, vegetables, vitamins, gummies and even sugar-free foods carry calories.

So, at the end of the day, even if you think you’re eating less, you’ll probably be close to 1200 calories.

While eating a balanced diet is important (I discuss many of these in my Choose MyPlate articles), protein is often the hardest micronutrient to get into your diet. (But if you need help, here’s a list of my favorite high protein foods)

If your goal is to lose fat, research has shown that protein is important. With a high protein diet I noticed:

This week, after planning a 1200 calorie day, I decided to take some pictures! So, here’s what a 1200 calorie day looks like for me. I like to eat 3 meals a day, with a dessert, so this is a picture of what I eat in a day:

After eating my planned meals, I changed the fruits and vegetables slightly each day to add variety to the diet, but kept the calories and macros constant.

While I like variety in food, I don’t like having different groceries for every meal. I change my meal plan weekly instead of daily. Much cheaper that way!

This preparation was really very simple. All of this was a 1200 calorie daily diet. Here’s how I prepared:
