The Colonoscopy Countdown
Those who have had a colonoscopy often complain that it is not unpleasant to be examined – it is the preparation the day before. Many who have undergone a colonoscopy are as affected as the exam itself. However, technology has evolved and now it is much easier to devour the preparation process and make it as fluid as possible.
The purpose of the colonoscopy preparation is to clean the intestines or the colon so that the inner walls of the colon are not obstructed.
Before your colonoscopy, your doctor will give you a set of dietary guidelines in the days before your colonoscopy. The guide usually contains a lot of instructions about what to eat and what to drink in the days before the exam. These guidelines will help prepare your colon for the procedure, so you should follow them exactly as directed. If you do so, the exam may be rescheduled.
Probably one or two days before the exam, your preparations begin. Before the exam, your doctor will put you on a clear liquid diet to help clean your bowels and prescribe a pain reliever such as MiraLax laxative and Dulcolax powder tablets. These laxatives are less bulky and more delicious to prepare and experience than other methods.

**Disclaimer: The content of this blog does not provide medical advice and does not create a patient-health care provider relationship of any kind. The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 95,000 new cases of colon cancer will be diagnosed this year. Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer after skin cancer. The Centers for Disease Control recommends that colon cancer screening with a colonoscopy begin at age 50 and be performed every 10 years until age 75. When colon cancer is detected first with this screening tool, 83-90% survive for five years or more.
About 1 in 3 adults do not follow this advice and are not tested at the age of 50. I admit I waited two years. I’m sure I procrastinated for the same reasons as many people – for no real reason. Most of the fear of the Prep and Clear Liquid diet (I loved solid food).
Plus, it’s Heart Month, and those with irritable bowel disease (IBD), Crohn’s disease, or ulcerative colitis are at increased risk for heart disease. So, there are many reasons for a colonoscopy.

I thought I’d share my recent colonoscopy experience here and encourage you to plan yours. Maybe my advice will help you if you have placed your first colonoscopy.
Your doctor will give you specific nutritional advice depending on the time of day when the exam is done. Mine was scheduled for 10 hours, so the day before I needed a pure liquid diet. If your appointment is later in the day, you may be allowed to eat a light breakfast the day before and then start the Clear Liquid diet. Some examples of clear liquids are black coffee, regular tea, clear juices (apple, white grape, white cranberry), non-red sports drinks, non-red gelatin, plain soup, clear soda, water.
The first few hours of a pure liquid diet can be a bit rough. You can think about food. But after a few hours, you have to top it off and enjoy your soup and flavored jelly. What will really cure your hunger pangs? “Preparation”.
There are many types of colonoscopy preparations on the market. Everyone’s goal: to poop. A lot. Everything your colon needs to come out. As a clear liquid.
This Dallas Mom Is Not Afraid Of A Colonoscopy
No matter what kind of “preparation” your doctor prescribes, I can almost guarantee it will be a little uncomfortable. Some may use the word “Ugly!” I was prescribed Suprep – which is given in two doses. Pour a bottle into a cup, then fill with cold water until you have 16 fluid ounces. Came through the mouth!
I made the mistake of trying to drink that first cup a little too soon. You know, get over it. I do not recommend this.
Not going to lie to you – it tastes like bath salts. Drinking it quickly made me struggle even more, especially since you have to follow that drink with 32 ounces of water within an hour. Some people find it useful to add sweet lemonade to the preparation.
When I took all that liquid, I felt quite sick. I almost threw up, but I knew I did the right thing for my health – colonoscopy saves lives. Everyone should know that they do not have colon cancer, and if it is detected, treatment can be started in time, which will improve your prognosis.
Is Coffee A Clear Liquid Diet For Colonoscopy
Everyone poops – let’s get this party started! When my children were young, we read books every day. One of them was called “All the poops”. The theme of this book was to encourage babies in diapers to not be afraid to poop out of their pants. My son once asked me at about 3 years old, “What exactly is poop?” The book presents the biology of feces and illustrates the feces of all types of mammals and sketches what their feces look like.
I’m telling you right now – colonoscopy-ready poo looks nothing like these illustrations. It’s a full geyser coming out of your *ss! Plus, there’s a lot to remove, so keep very soft tissues handy (one of the nurses at the hospital joked about the “ring of fire” you can actually hear the morning after).
I took Prep One at 4:30 pm, the afternoon before the morning test. Maybe it’s my maintenance of a high fiber diet or my slower motility, but it took about 2 hours for the preparation to start working, and once it did, it continued to work. Stay near the bathroom. I had cleared most of my colon by 10pm and needed to sleep.
But don’t plan on sleeping much because you’ll probably get up in the middle of the night for a few bathroom breaks. My husband claimed he was woken up by my bowels grumbling.
Time To Drop The ‘no Eating Rule’ Before Colonoscopy?
Wait, because a few hours before the actual exam, you will be treated to Prep Two.
According to the doctor’s order, you need to take another preparation about 5 hours before the exam. For me, this meant setting my alarm for 5:00 in the morning. However, I woke up at 4:00 am and was wide awake, so I thought I would be done with it and hopefully I could take a one hour nap before waking up at 7:00 am.
Preparation two did not go any easier than preparation one. However, I changed my strategy and drank small sips, in between clear water. While I almost consumed Prep One, I drank Prep Two gradually over 20 minutes, which made me less sick. In my case, I was two-thirds of the way through the solution before it took effect. Instead of finishing it, I just drank the recommended water and let nature take its course. Nature has done its work.
After you have finished pooping, go to the hospital for the checkup yourself. A nurse will welcome you and make you comfortable. You will be asked if your bowel movement now looks like urine (nice, right?). A sedative or general anesthesia is usually given for the procedure. I have had a colonoscopy in the past without anesthesia (not terrible), but this time I had anesthesia. This was my first experience with anesthesia and I was worried about it for no real reason. The anesthesiologist told me to have a sweet dream and I remember taking two breaths and then 3 seconds later I heard: “Go, Rosanne, everything is done, you did great.” Of course, it was actually 15 minutes later, but it felt like 3 seconds.
What Kind Of Jell O Can I Eat Before A Colonoscopy?
The harmfulness of this preparation of potions and the physical problems that accompany emptying the entire colon are a small price to pay for your life. Checking the inside of the colon is the only way to detect colon cancer.
Colon cancer usually has no symptoms until the disease is advanced. The earlier the discovery, the better the result.
