Keto Diet 4 Weeks Before And After – Becoming a mother helped Melissa Ellis get healthy and change her life. She wanted to run around and play with the kids, and knew that to do that, she had to lose weight. She remembers feeling trapped in her body and had to do something about it, so she decided to start a ketogenic diet. Melissa lost 116 pounds after giving birth to her first child and recently lost 50 pounds after giving birth to her second child. Read on for Melissa’s full story.

Melissa Ellis: After having my first child five years ago, my weight hit an all-time high. I weigh over 280 lbs. I feel tired, weak and a little defeated. There are a few obvious things about being a new mom. I want to keep my family healthy and able to run and play. All these asked me to change my life. But most of the time I just feel uncomfortable in my skin. We took our baby to the beach for the first time and the second time. Both times I was embarrassed to wear a bathing suit and sat on the sand fully dressed instead. I don’t like myself at all. I don’t feel like the girl I see in the mirror. I felt like I was stuck in a stranger’s body and I knew I had to let myself out.

PS: What does a typical day of eating look like for you? Does your diet change during your workout?

Me: I follow a ketogenic diet. I usually start the day with coffee because… #MomLife! I like my coffee mixed with heavy cream and stevia. The natural fats in the heavy whipping cream keep me full until around 10 o’clock. This is when I usually have time to sit down and eat my first meal of the day. This meal is usually high in protein (eg bacon and eggs).

“I listen to my body. I don’t deprive myself. I give my body the quality fuel it needs.”

In the afternoon I usually have another meal: a salad with grilled chicken or fish, vegetables, and a thick dressing, or a meat and a vegetable. When I’m hungry before my next meal, I like to have nuts as a snack – pecans are my favorite. Dinner is usually meat and non-starchy vegetables and/or salad. When I’m hungry before bed, I have a handful of nuts and a cup of hot caffeine-free tea. The bottom line is, when I’m hungry, I eat. I listen to my body. I don’t lack myself. I provide my body with the quality fuel it needs. I try to eat intuitively, not out of habit. I do this both on my workouts and on my rest days.

Me: I don’t. I found that by simply eating low carb and eating intuitively, I was able to lose weight and keep it off. Plus, counting and weighing every bite that goes into my mouth is for the birds! I have done this in the past and after a few weeks I got so tired of the process that I gave up completely. I’m not doing mass counting anymore and I’m not going to give up! I just found what works for me.

The Keto Diet Is Popular, But Is It Good For You?

Me: I lost 116 pounds in 18 months and kept the weight off for years until pregnant with my second child. In January of this year I gave birth to our second child. Since giving birth to him 16 weeks ago, I’ve lost 50 lbs and am almost back to my pre-pregnancy self.

Me: What seems like a small thing is actually a big thing. I can climb the stairs without feeling out of breath. I can cross my legs – that’s very important to me. I can sit in a movie theater seat without worrying about it being too big to fit. I can buy clothes anywhere, not just specialty stores. The list goes on and on.

Me: The most challenging part is just showing up every day. If I don’t want to watch, if I’m having a bad day, if I’ve cheated on my meal plan and want to throw in the towel, if I feel like I should have moved on, if I’ve played the comparison game and don’t feel like I’m more. Whether it’s a good day or a bad day, I have to be there for me.

I have to work hard every day. Every day I have to think about my health, that can be a little difficult, but I have to. I’ve seen what happens when I don’t. So even though I’m far from perfect and sometimes fall, I still get back up every day!

PS: What advice do you have for mothers who want to get their figure back after giving birth?

Me: Give yourself grace. Give yourself lots of grace! Your body has just created life and it has been a wonderful and difficult journey. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. When you​​​​are​​ready​​to​​start​​your​​postpartum​​journey,​​go​​at​​your​​own​​pace​​and​​do​​not​​compare​​your​​journey​​to​​someone​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​. This is your journey. Most importantly, be patient. After a year, you will be amazed at how you look and feel. Those endless nights without sleep and food will be much less. You can shower again – can I get an amen? – You will practice self-care. Start with small healthy changes, one day at a time.

Me: Just do it, like now! Don’t start tomorrow or Monday or next month. Start now. Do not set the exact amount you need to weigh. These goals tend to overwhelm us and many times cause us to burn out and give up. Don’t give yourself a deadline. What does it matter if you lose 50 pounds by July? So what if it’s September? Don’t place these unnecessary expectations on yourself. Get started, live a healthy life, follow the meal plan and get moving! Do this every day and the rest will take care of itself!
