Is Plant Based Diet The Same As Vegan – Terminology can be confusing when it comes to different diets, diets, and lifestyles. Therefore, when considering reducing meat and animal products in your diet, it is helpful to be familiar with the different dietary options associated with reducing meat. “Plant-based” has become an umbrella term for meatless meals, but there are several distinct categories.

The term “plant-based” covers a wide variety of dietary choices that include little (or no) animal foods, such as dairy and meat, and consist primarily of high amounts of plant foods, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, and plant-derived products. In general, a product or food can be classified as “vegetable” if it does not contain animal ingredients, but instead is made from plant sources.

There isn’t one exact way to eat plant-based foods, but instead there are a range of options, ranging from strictly free of animal products (a vegan diet) to mostly plant-based foods with occasional meat and animal foods, known as a “flexitarian diet.”

Flexitarian means following a diet consisting primarily of plant foods, but occasionally including small amounts of animal products (meat, seafood, and dairy) in your meals. The idea is to reduce consumption of most animal products, but be flexible, that is. A “flexitarian diet,” in one’s dietary choices when necessary or desired.

Vegan means avoiding all meat (no beef, chicken, shellfish, or pork), but including some non-meat animal products in your diet, such as liquid dairy, cheese, eggs, and honey.

Vegan means not eating animal foods or ingredients such as meat, shellfish, dairy, eggs or honey. Many vegans also extend their dietary choices to other aspects of their lifestyle, such as not wearing leather and not buying products made with animal ingredients. The term “vegan” was coined in 1944 by British animal rights activist Donald Watson to refer to someone who completely abstains from all animal products for ethical reasons. Today, a person who identifies as a vegetarian may choose to do so for a variety of reasons, including environmental protection, animal welfare, or personal health.

Reverse Diabetes With Plant Based Vegan Diet

Plant-based ingredients and foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, and grains are often low in saturated fat and cholesterol, high in fiber, and are excellent sources of vitamins and minerals. Adding more plant-based meals to your diet and reducing your meat consumption has been shown to reduce your risk of diabetes, heart disease, and kidney disease.

That said, not all plant foods are created equal. Sugar comes entirely from plants, as does bleached (refined) white flour, but these ingredients retain so little of their nutritional content that nutritionists agree that these foods should be eaten in moderation. Focusing on whole grains, foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids (walnuts, chia and hemp seeds, algae oils, etc.), fruits, vegetables, and unsaturated fats can provide protective health benefits.

There are numerous studies showing the detrimental effects of industrial livestock production on the environment. Plant-based diets are generally more sustainable than diets centered on meat (especially red meat) and dairy products, because industrial livestock farming uses more land, water, and natural resources than plant-based foods. Livestock production alone is responsible for 14.5% of global anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, more than the entire transport sector.

Not only do vegans avoid all animal products in their diets, but they try to avoid products or practices associated with the exploitation of animals in their daily lives.

Plant Based Vs. Vegan

That could mean avoiding animal-tested leather, fur, grooming products, and visits to zoos. Rather than focusing excessively on diet, it includes making a conscious effort to avoid anything to do with exploiting animals in your day-to-day life.

In vegetarianism, the motivation is to avoid animal cruelty in all aspects of life. Along this line of thinking, a person can still enjoy a diet made mostly of processed foods and fast food while still being a vegetarian. This is not a description of a person eating healthy.

Meanwhile, the term plant-based originated in the health world. It describes a healthy eating pattern in which the majority of the diet consists of whole, unprocessed plants. This way of eating is often done for better health (whether it’s disease prevention, weight loss, or some other associated benefit of a whole-food, plant-based eating style).

Likewise, the term plant-based has no ethical connotations. People who follow a plant-based diet may still eat animal products or wear leather goods on rare occasions. There are no hard and fast parameters.
