FODMAPs (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols) are sugar alcohols and short-chain carbohydrates that are poorly absorbed and difficult to digest and are fermented by intestinal bacteria in the large intestine. If carbohydrates are not broken down, they stay in your intestines.

Furthermore, if there is an overgrowth of bacteria, the bacteria in the small intestine begin to ferment carbohydrates prematurely. All of these can cause symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, cramping, excessive gas, diarrhea and/or constipation.
The low FODMAP diet can be difficult to follow because it excludes many common and even healthy foods that may contain high FODMAPs. Some foods are completely eliminated or extremely restricted for 3-8 weeks and then gradually reintroduced to the low-FODMAP diet to see if they cause symptoms.
It’s not meant to be a permanent solution because it’s too restrictive, but it can work well enough to be a treatment for people with gastrointestinal (GI) problems. Although there is insufficient scientific evidence, it is estimated that around 50% of people with IBS may benefit from a low-FODMAP diet.
A low FODMAP diet has been clinically proven to treat IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and related symptoms. IBS is a chronic long-term disorder that causes symptoms such as bloating, gas, cramping, abdominal pain and diarrhea or constipation, or sometimes even both.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (ibs)
Often people who suffer from IBS also suffer from SIBO (sometimes called blind loop syndrome). This occurs when there is an abnormal increase in the general population of bacteria in the small intestine (especially types of bacteria that are not normally found in this part of the digestive tract). Reducing or eliminating foods high in FODMAPs can improve digestive health in these people (14, 15).
Some people use GAPS, SCD, or another standard Candida diet to treat yeast overgrowth. However, according to Chris Kresser, the problem with the GAPS, SCD and Candida diets (depending on how they are done) is that they can be extremely low carb or extremely low glucose or sugar diets.
But extra-low-carb diets—and diets that remove every possible source of glucose or sugar from the diet—can become ketogenic. In other words, your body starts producing ketones. This is bad because there are studies that Candida and other yeasts can actually thrive on ketones.
There are also studies showing that white blood cells (neutrophils) are less able to kill Candida when ketones are present. This is why some people start using a low-FODMAP diet for Candida overgrowth, as bacterial and fungal markers seem to change and disappear when following this diet (12).

According to some research, a low-FODMAP diet may also prevent high pressure in the colon, which could, in theory, help people correct or avoid diverticulitis (13).
Endometriosis is a long-term disorder in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus begins to grow in other parts of your body, such as your ovaries and fallopian tubes. This condition affects about 1 in 9 women. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and endometriosis are two disorders that share similar symptoms, including bowel pain, bloating, low-grade inflammation, visceral hypersensitivity, changes in bowel habits, and distention.
These common features can often contribute to delayed diagnosis or misdiagnosis of one condition when it is actually another. Women with endometriosis are more likely to have IBS. It is also possible to have both conditions at the same time. However, when looking at women with IBS and endometriosis, eating low-FODMAP foods can help up to 72% of this subgroup (16).
Fibromyalgia is a chronic, rheumatic condition characterized by widespread myofascial pain that has a significant impact on quality of life. This disease is associated with comorbidities of gastrointestinal (GI) disorders and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). According to a study, a low-FODMAP diet can lead to a significant reduction in gastrointestinal disturbances and symptoms of fibromyalgia, including pain scores (17).

This is a digestive condition that affects the ring of muscle between your esophagus and stomach and causes chest pain, burning sensation in the chest, heartburn, acidity, bitter taste in the mouth and dry mouth. Many people with GERD also have GERD, but not everyone who has GERD. Although there is not yet enough scientific evidence why a low-FODMAP diet can help reduce GERD symptoms, many people with GERD who have tried a low-FODMAP diet have reported fewer symptoms (18).

Let’s explain all the FODMAP subgroups in detail – exactly why they cause problems after eating and what are the food sources of each FODMAP subgroup. O – oligosaccharides or oligosaccharides (fructans and galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS))
Oligosaccharides are a type of carbohydrate formed when 3-10 monosaccharide units (simple sugars) are linked together. They are highly fermentable food ingredients. These Oligos can usually cause problems in many people because humans do not have the enzymes needed to break the bonds between the chains that make up these molecules.
Also, people with IBS do not absorb oligosaccharides. This is why eating foods high in oligos, such as beans, often causes bloating, abdominal pain and bloating.
