All doctors are just telling you is that IBS symptoms can be managed with a proper diet, enough sleep, and regular exercise.

Irritable bowel syndrome is a very unpleasant condition. It is characterized by drastic changes in stool. While some people suffer from constipation, others may experience diarrhea.

Yes, medical intervention is necessary to treat IBS. But lifestyle and nutritional changes can also play an important role in reversing symptoms.

Best Ibs Diets: Low Fodmap, Elemental, High Fiber, More

Let’s explore some of these nutritional changes. I’m going to read through this article and explain the recovery steps as I work with any client who suffers from IBS.

The first and most important thing to understand is the root cause of your IBS symptoms. IBS is multifaceted, which means it can have more than one cause. Food allergies, food sensitivities, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), and gut dysbiosis may be partly to blame.

Probably one of the biggest irritants to the gut is lactose – milk sugar. As babies, we have an enzyme called lactase that helps us break down and digest lactose (milk). But after about two years, people tend to lose the enzyme. This makes it impossible for adults to digest dairy and is present in IBS symptoms. Some people are more affected than others.

Not only that, but dairy also attacks the beta cells of the pancreas, which leads to type 2 diabetes, and the thyroid, which leads to hypothyroidism.

In fact, for many of my clients, their IBS symptoms disappear within a few weeks of removing dairy from their diet.

This may also indicate that most people may have lactose intolerance rather than IBS.

Regardless, it’s worth cutting dairy out of your diet for a few weeks and monitoring your progress. Regardless, this includes milk, curd, ghee, butter, paneer, and cheese.

So the first step is to learn about dairy alternatives and start swapping your milk chai for soy milk chai and milk curds for peanut and rice milk curds. Alternatives are available all over the world and can be easily made at home.

Once you’ve successfully switched to dairy-free alternatives, the next step is to start restoring the good bacteria in your gut.

Dr. Cresci explains that high FODMAPs are harder to digest. As a result, gut bacteria metabolize undigested food, leading to excess gas, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and constipation.

Depending on their IBS symptoms, I will work with my clients on a low to moderate FODMAP diet for several weeks. However, it is absolutely imperative to note that high FODMAP foods are not bad and should definitely not be avoided for more than a few weeks.

The low FODMAP approach works like a bandage, and you may notice an improvement in your symptoms. However, a low-FODMAP diet provides only short-term relief and does not address the real issue of poor bowel function.

Slowly introducing high FODMAP foods is the only way to increase the diversity of gut bacteria and begin to heal your gut.

Fiber can help some people with IBS. But it can also make your IBS symptoms worse if you have gas and diarrhea. However, these symptoms have nothing to do with fiber itself, but with poor gut function.

I often work with clients to slowly add the soluble fiber first and then the insoluble fiber. Starting with 25 grams of fiber per day and slowly increasing to 60 grams is ideal.

Fiber supplements also lead to increased levels of bifidobacteria (good bacteria). These levels are an important family of gut bacteria that not only contribute to gut motility, but also immune function, insulin resistance and maintaining an optimal body weight.

For severe SIBO symptoms, mild prebiotic supplements can be helpful in addition to antimicrobial regimens. For example, in a human clinical trial for SIBO, the combination of the antibiotics rifaximin and guar gum eliminated SIBO in 87.1% of cases, compared to 62.1% when the antibiotic was used alone.

Unlike insoluble fiber, soluble fiber dissolves in water and adds extra bulk. Food sources rich in soluble fiber are citrus fruits, barley, peas and apples.

Gluten is a protein found in grain products such as wheat, rye and barley. Gluten is only a problem if you are gluten intolerant, such as someone with celiac disease. In this case, a gluten-free diet can help relieve symptoms.

However, wheat (like any other grain) can actually reduce inflammation. Avoiding gluten when you’ve not been diagnosed with an allergy can further reduce plant diversity, doing more harm than good, according to Harvard Medical School. Plant diversity is a major predictor of gut health.
