Hypoglycemia Carnivore Diet – Medically Reviewed by Kathy W. Of Warwick, R.D., CDE, Nutrition — By Sarah Angle — Updated February 24, 2020
When Anna K. was diagnosed with gestational diabetes during pregnancy at age 40, her doctor recommended a standard gestational diabetes diet. This diet consists of lean protein and around 150-200 grams of carbohydrates per day, spread over three meals and two snacks.
Hypoglycemia Carnivore Diet
“It didn’t take long for me to see on my glucose monitor that this amount of carbohydrates, even healthy, whole foods, was raising my blood sugar quite a bit,” she says.
My Beef With The Carnivore Diet
Despite the doctors, she went on a very low-carb diet for the rest of her pregnancy to control her blood sugar. He ate about 50 grams of carbohydrates a day.
But after giving birth, her glucose levels worsened. He was later diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
He was initially able to manage it with a low-carb diet and medication. But when her blood sugar continued to rise, she chose to “give birth under a screen.”
For Anna, that meant gradually reducing her carb intake until her daily carb count was at or close to zero.
How To Balance Keto And Hypoglycemia
“If I avoid carbs and only eat meat, fat, eggs, and hard cheeses, my blood sugar rarely drops below 100 mg/dL, and my fasting number never goes above 90,” she says. “My A1C is in the normal range since I eat no carbs.”
In the 3 1/2 years that have passed since she started the carnivorous diet, Anna has never looked back. He says his cholesterol ratio is so good that even doctors are shocked.
The Carnivore Diet has recently gained popularity thanks to Dr. Sean Baker, an orthopedic surgeon, who completed his experiment with a low-carb, high-fat diet and saw improvements in his health and body composition.
This led him to experiment with a 30-day carnivorous diet. His joint pain disappeared and he never returned. Now she promotes the diet to others.
Can A Ketogenic Diet Cause Hypoglycemia Or Low Blood Sugar?
The diet consists of all animal products, and most people prefer high amounts of fat. Red meat, poultry, organ meats, processed meats such as bacon, sausages, hot dogs, fish and eggs are all planned. Some people also eat dairy products, especially cheese. Others also include spices and seasonings as part of the diet.
Breakfast can be a few slices of bacon, a slow-boiled egg and a slice of cheddar cheese. Lunch is a kosher hot dog mixed with mayo and egg yolk, a turkey breast and a dollop of mayo.
Proponents of the diet tout its ability to aid weight loss, treat autoimmune diseases, reduce digestive problems and improve heart health.
“From a biochemical standpoint, if you only eat meat, you’re consuming virtually no glucose, so your blood sugar levels won’t be affected,” says Dr. Daria Long Gillespie, a clinical assistant professor at the University of Tennessee School of Medicine. medicine “But diabetes is more than blood sugar levels.”
Steps To Break The Cycle Of Hypoglycemia
Measuring blood sugar refers to the short-term, immediate effects of food. But over time, a diet that consists mostly or exclusively of meat can have long-term health consequences, he says.
“When you only buy meat, you miss out on a lot of nutrients, fibre, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. And you get a lot of saturated fat,’ says Long Gillespie.
Many of the experts we spoke to for this story advise against going carnivorous, especially if you have diabetes.
“We know from extensive research that people with diabetes are at much higher risk for heart disease,” explains Toby Smithson, RDN, CDE, spokesperson for the American Association of Diabetes Educators. “We also know that a diet high in saturated fat can lead to heart disease.” Even if you’re careful to choose lean meats, a carnivorous diet will still be higher in saturated fat, he says.
Quantifying Insulin Sensitivity And Entero Insular Responsiveness To Hyper And Hypoglycemia In Ferrets
When Harvard researchers recently reviewed more than two decades of data on more than 115,000 people, they found that:
Surprisingly, even just 1 percent of that fat with the same number of calories from polyunsaturated fat, whole grains or plant protein reduced the risk by 6 to 8 percent.
But not everyone agrees with the research that shows the negative effects of eating too much meat.
Dr. Georgia Ede, a psychiatrist who specializes in nutrition and herself eats a mostly meat diet, says the vast majority of research suggesting meat consumption is linked to cancer and heart disease in humans comes from epidemiological studies.
How The Ketogenic Diet And Intermittent Fasting Cured My Non Diabetic Hypoglycemia
“At best, this method, which has been widely discredited, can only generate guesses about the connection between food and health, which must then be tested in clinical trials,” says Ede.
His claim is common among carnivorous eaters. But most population-based research linking excess meat consumption to health conditions is usually enough to dissuade health professionals from recommending it.
A 2018 study also found that a high intake of red and processed meat is associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and insulin resistance, raising concerns among the diabetes community.
Anna states that although she is aware of common medical advice that fatty meat is dangerous, she feels that the dangers of chronically high blood sugar are more serious than any potential danger of eating meat.
Carnivory: How Amber Transformed Her Health With A Meat Only Diet
“After about 24 hours of fasting or no carbohydrates, liver glycogen stores are not available,” explains Smithson. “Our muscles need insulin to get glucose into the cells, so a person with diabetes may experience a spike in blood sugar when they skip carbs.”
Also, a person with diabetes who takes medications like insulin can experience hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, just by eating meat, Smithson says.
To restore blood sugar levels, they should consume fast-acting carbohydrates, not meat, he explains.
Or dietary interventions to stop hypertension is a more beneficial diet for people with diabetes,” says Kayla Jackel, RD, CDE, a diabetes educator at Mount Sinai Health System.
Study Finds Serious Mental Illnesses Improve On Ketogenic Diet
Also in people with diabetes. It is rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains and emphasizes leaner protein choices such as fish and poultry, low-fat dairy and beans. Foods high in saturated fat and added sugar are limited.
For another possibility, recent research has found that a low-fat vegan diet can improve markers of type 2 diabetes in people who have not developed diabetes. This also shows the importance of plant-based foods in the prevention and management of diabetes.

Carbohydrates And The Carnivore Diet
Our experts are constantly monitoring the health and wellness field, and we update our articles as new information becomes available. I have struggled with sugar addiction and yo-yo weight loss diets for as long as I can remember. I first heard about the Carnivor Diet on the Joe Rogan podcast with Dr. With Shawn Baker. I put the information aside and neglected to apply it for a while. This year’s diet came into my life with another podcast this time by Jordan Peterson and I decided what to lose. I was in constant pain and anxiety from work flowed into other faucets in my life, affecting personal relationships and work performance. I did my research and started a 30 day challenge which is now a 60 day challenge within the first 30 days my anxiety melted away. I am no longer in pain and constantly bloated and I have lost 22.5 pounds feeling and looking better now in my 30’s than ever. I was 18 years old. This becomes a lifestyle where the positives easily outweigh the negatives.
I am a 34-year-old mother of three children. I was a high school teacher and track coach in Nebraska for 10 years. In college I was a 2 time NCAA All-American in the 400m and decided to have my blisters closed collegiately due to bad hypoglycemia and chronic pain.
Ron has lost 100 pounds and is free of skin blemishes, snoring, back pain, diverticulosis, toenail fungus and anxiety.
After these health issues, I discovered gallstones in 2016 (removed with a “flush” I found online), a perforated colon in 2020, and an episode of Bell’s palsy in January 22 after my brother’s stroke last year. I also recorded a podcast about the carnivore diet and my experience, which you can listen to here.
