What Is The Master Cleanse?
Many people fast for a day or so as part of their religious and spiritual practice. Some fast to “cleanse” their body, while others fast to lose weight quickly. Liquid fasts are a popular fasting method for weight loss, but they can be dangerous to your health. With this goal in mind, several types of fasting have been devised. Here are a few:
The Master Cleanse is an intensive 10-day liquid fast originally written by Stanley Burroughs in his book The Master Cleanse in 2013 and has since evolved into many iterations. It’s also known as the “lemonade diet” because it basically calls for plain water, with a little sugar (maple syrup) added to provide a slight energy boost. Those on a diet should stick to this fast for at least 10 days. Each day, they drank 6 to 12 cups of this sweetened concoction, totaling between 650 and 1,300 calories.
While fasting for several days (assuming fluid intake is adequate) is not harmful, there is no evidence to support its benefits. However, fasting for more than a week, even with a low calorie intake, can damage your health. You should consume enough protein to meet your body’s needs. If you don’t eat protein, your body starts breaking down your muscle (protein) to get the amino acids (building blocks of protein) it needs. If you don’t get enough protein, prolonged fasting can damage your heart (a type of muscle), as well as your liver and kidneys, which shrink in size. Insufficient protein also impairs their function.
There is no scientific evidence that fasting detoxifies the body. Our bodies are already pretty self-sufficient. The liver is the body’s natural detoxification center. Other organs, including the lungs, kidneys and skin, also remove impurities and toxins from the body. Fasting may give the impression that your body is “cleansed” of impurities, but it is not. Some people report feeling great after fasting, while others experience sluggishness, fatigue, pain, and difficulty concentrating. This is because they often do not consume enough calories. (It is important to note that this type of fasting involves drinking a lot of water and consuming little salt to maintain the body’s normal salt and water balance.)
