Most of my food is at home. And I’m by no means an expert cook, which proves my point that the average person with some cooking skills can still prepare delicious, healthy, home-cooked meals. Sometimes I have to, or even want to, eat out. I’m just trying to choose healthier options. But I also sometimes skip meals because there aren’t any healthy options on the street.
I still have to eat my delicious cereal cereal, but with less sugar. One day I was having a V-8 and a piece of bacon for breakfast! I usually break the diet in a big way once a week.
I’ve been keeping my weight in check by making healthy lifestyle changes, weighing myself frequently, dieting again when I gain weight, and eating a lot of good food including carbs, fat, meat, and some sweets. I usually still try to keep my carbohydrates to about ¼ of my plate and still eat less fast food, snacks, and processed foods. But I still have indulgences. In fact, as I sit here at the Memphis Embassy Suites writing this, I’m planning to enjoy the Manager’s Special tonight!

A year later I’m still doing well. Even though I busted over Christmas and put on a few pounds, I’m slowly gaining them back.

My best friend, an emergency medicine doctor in Wisconsin, dared me to run a 10k with her when we planned a trip to visit her and her family. I accept the challenge. But, since I had given up running years before and was basically an overweight trainer, I knew I had to get in some training. So, I spent 10 weeks preparing. The first week was brutal. I can only run for about 5 minutes, then have to walk for about 10 minutes. But, after the first 2 weeks, I could run about 3 miles without stopping. I added about a mile a week until I could run more than 7 miles! Yes, I’m quite slow but I can do it. On a big race day, I set my best time and felt great.
After that success, I continued to practice. I develop a reasonable schedule where I run 3-4 times a week, almost always in the morning when I’m at my best. For the next 2 months, I was able to run about an extra mile a week on my “long run.” I lost about 7lbs in the process, without any real dieting. This training culminated with running my first half marathon. That’s 13.1 miles! From slacker to athlete: if I can do it, so can you.
Since my first half marathon, I’ve lost 20-25 pounds and run another half race and more. In fact, I had significantly increased my speed and could run without being out of breath. My knees no longer hurt when I exercise and my cardiovascular health has greatly improved. In fact, I’m healthier now than I was when I was in my 30s. I keep training 3-4 mornings a week.
