Sorry I’ve been such a slacker in updating my progress since gastric sleeve surgery. (See my other posts about my gastric sleeve surgery.) My surgery was on April 25, 2016. I am now almost 10 weeks post-op. This was supposed to be my 2 month/8 week update so it’s a bit late. My girls are home with me all summer and keeping them busy and active takes priority over posting, so please excuse me.
I have lost 27 pounds since surgery and a total of 37 pounds overall since starting the pre-op diet. It’s slow weight loss compared to a lot of people who get the sleeve BUT I’m 42, I’ve probably killed my metabolism with so many diets over the years and I have PCOS so losing weight is even harder. That said, at least I’m losing, even if it’s slow. I’m more than halfway to my goal of 150. Only 35 more pounds to go. Eventually I’d like to be closer to 135, but 150 is my goal for now. I will admit that I have been busy with my girls at home and haven’t been exercising as much as I should have. (Even though I wasn’t losing any faster when I worked out the first month.) I’m exhausted all the time from my fibromyalgia, so it’s hard for me to stay motivated. Do you have any tips on how to motivate yourself to go to the gym or exercise? Please share them. One day I would like to train. Right now, not so much sadness. I am honest. But even when I’m not losing weight, I can tell I’m losing inches. I’m really starting to see the difference from the before and after pictures.
Stomach Pain After Bariatric Surgery
TIP – Someone told me this tip and it’s a good one. Take pictures of yourself each month in the same door frame. It’s easier to see weight loss when you’re in the same “frame.” It helps to keep perspective.
The best news is I went to my endocrinologist and………..MY A1C IS NORMAL WITHOUT MEDICATION!!!! My diabetes is cured!!! If anything, I am absolutely grateful to this surgery for this news!!!
However, there is some bad news. I’ve mentioned before that everything I eat gets stuck on the 3rd bite, no matter how small my bite is and how much I chew. I went in for an upper GI test a few weeks ago and was found to have reflux and a hiatal hernia which I didn’t have before the surgery. Maybe it was from the few times I threw up after surgery or when I had the hiccups a few times. I tried everything else my doctor suggested – slow chewing, smaller bites, going back to liquids for a few days, etc. and nothing helped SOOOOO Fixing the hernia in a few weeks. I’m still not happy with the surgery but I want relief and I can’t live like this with food that gets stuck at every meal. It’s uncomfortable and there’s no way you can live forever. I will update information about the surgery when I finally get a date, but the surgeon said it was laparoscopic and only required one night in the hospital. I hope the pain is minimal like the sleeve surgery was for me.
The middle image below is a good illustration of what is happening to my sleeve. Only a picture of the right side of the stomach is gone and so is my stomach. The top of my new stomach slides over the diaphragm because of the hernia. When I eat something, it sits above my diaphragm and gets stuck because the stomach is not where it should be. My entire stomach should be below the diaphragm instead of part of it above the diaphragm where my esophagus should be. It makes perfect sense why food gets stuck. I hope the surgery fixes it and I can start my “new normal” life.
Gastric Sleeve Diet One Year After Surgery
Here are some foods I’ve been eating lately. I met with a nutritionist and he said to stick to protein for now. When I lose another 10 pounds, he said I can add one starch and one fruit a day on the days I work out. I still try to drink at least 64 ounces of fluids a day (mostly water). I stay away from caffeine as it is a diuretic. The doctor said I should drink 2 cups for every cup of caffeine to counteract the effects. It’s hard enough to get 64oz to begin with so I avoid caffeine. I only drink protein shakes on days when I have very little protein for the day, so only one or two days a week.
I start every day with Fairlife Milk. It is high in protein and low in carbohydrates. I take my meds (ursodiol and omeprazole) with my milk, as well as my vitamins (multi, B complex, iron, D, B12 (during the day as it was high when I got tested a few weeks ago) and hair, skin, and vitamins for nails I haven’t started losing my hair yet but they say it usually starts at 3 months so it will probably happen soon With biotin in hair, skin and nails vitamins and organic PURA PURA D’OR Organic shampoo and D’OR conditioner I use it to prevent hair loss, I hope my hair is gone very little.Two hours after I take my iron, I take 2 chewable calcium tablets.
Great for a sweet fix. I only have one or two in a pack
