The concept of a bio-based economy has gained attention and importance in recent years. It is seen as an opportunity to reduce dependence on fossil resources while ensuring the supply of energy, water, and raw materials, and also preserving soils, climate and environment. The intended change is characterized by economic, environmental and social challenges and opportunities, and is understood as a process of social change towards a sustainable, life-based and natural economy. This process requires general mechanisms to establish and monitor safeguards for the sustainable development of the world-based economy at the national and EU level. Ensuring the sustainability and innovation of sustainable products helps to manage biogenic resources and products in a sustainable way. In this paper, we examine the current status of certification of sustainability and innovation in the resource-based economy by conducting a comprehensive desk study, supported by a series of expert interviews. The analysis revealed a surprising amount of existing certification procedures, requirements, references and applicable standards. However, the relevant gaps related to existing evaluation systems, practical implementation of the requirements of certification processes, legislative processes, end-of-life processes, and important standardization activities, it is known that more research and development is needed to improve certification and standardization for economic growth.

The bio-based economy (BBE) is seen as an opportunity to overcome the era of fossil resources and technology, to support the health and nutrition of the growing world population, and to ensure the supply of energy, water, and raw materials, while preserving the soil, climate and environment [1]. Currently, more than 40 countries have defined specific strategies for the development of BBE or economy (BE) [2]. Although there is some difference between the two terms BBE and BE, the two concepts are often used interchangeably in the literature [3]. For the purpose of this study, we refer to the concept of BBE as defined by the EU, which proposes that “a bio-based economy fully integrates natural resources and renewable materials in land and sea that material, diversity and natural materials. Management and control of planned changes require accurate measurement, information, and tools to cover not only BE in general, but different dimensions of BE development [5]. This requires general guidelines for the establishment and monitoring of safeguards for the sustainable development of the BBE economy at the national and EU level.
