The FODMAP elimination diet is also called a low FODMAP diet. Most of the food and drink we eat is digested and absorbed in the small intestine. However, some people have trouble digesting FODMAP foods (see list of FODMAP foods below).

When this happens, FODMAPs go down into the large intestine and become food for the bacteria that live there. As a result, gas, bloating, and flatulence occur as bacteria break down and colonize the foD maps in the large intestine. FODMAPs also draw water into the large intestine, contributing to bloating and diarrhea.

Between six and eight weeks, all high-FODMAP foods are removed from the diet. Not all foods high in FODMAPs will be healthy for all IBS patients. It’s important to consult a registered dietitian to understand which foods are problematic for you, and also to make sure you aren’t missing any nutrients from your diet.

After eight weeks, certain high-FODMAP foods can be reintroduced slowly, one at a time, so you can see which foods trigger IBS. The types and amounts of FODMAP foods tolerated vary from person to person.
