Does Keto Diet Raise Cholesterol – Interested in eating a ketogenic diet but worried about your cholesterol? Has your doctor warned you about an increase in cholesterol if you eat a lot of eggs? What is the real cause of heart disease and what does high cholesterol mean?
If you really want to know your heart disease risk, look at the CAC score. A calcium score is an inexpensive (usually $100) and easy test that measures plaque buildup in the coronary arteries. The score for heart disease (and overall risk of death) is much better than total cholesterol. Total cholesterol only correlates to a few percent in the statin companies’ own trials. A CAC score of 100 (vs. 0) is associated with an 800% increased risk of death!!

For some people, keto improves this risk factor for heart disease. But not so for others.
It’s a complicated matter: cholesterol levels depend not only on diet, but also on genes and body composition. And there are many ways to measure what we call cholesterol.
We also need to keep in mind that cholesterol is not the only risk factor for heart disease. This is just one of many.
Today you will learn why cholesterol is important, how to measure cholesterol and measure keto and cholesterol. let’s dive in
Health & Wellness News
Cholesterol is a sterol (a type of organic molecule) that builds cell membranes and helps synthesize hormones. It is very important for animal life.
When people talk about their “cholesterol,” they’re usually talking about the cholesterol inside lipoproteins—the tiny blood vessels in your bloodstream that carry cholesterol in and out of cells.
There are many different types of lipoproteins, but the two most common (and related to cholesterol measurements) are low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL).[*]
LDL is known as “bad cholesterol” because higher levels of LDL cholesterol are associated with a greater risk of heart disease. The main function of LDL particles is to transport cholesterol, triglycerides and other nutrients to the cells. We couldn’t live without them.
Low Carbohydrate Vs High Carbohydrate Diets
HDL is known as “good cholesterol” because higher levels are associated with a lower risk of heart disease.[*] Why? According to the theory, a higher concentration of cholesterol in HDL particles indicates that more cholesterol is leaving the arteries. Unfortunately, attempts to reduce the risk of heart disease by increasing HDL levels pharmacologically have failed.[*]
It’s time to stop calling HDL and LDL cholesterol “good” and “bad.” None of these claims can be scientifically confirmed.
For example, evidence suggests that tests such as APoB and LDL-P, which measure the amount of LDL particles in the bloodstream (as opposed to cholesterol).
It also appears that smaller LDL particles are more dangerous than large LDL particles, all things being equal, from a heart disease risk perspective.[*]

For this reason, regardless of whether your normal lipids look normal or not, you may wish to proceed with more advanced tests.
In the last bullet, it is difficult to connect a person’s diet, obesity and cholesterol. Cholesterol is high in both obese and diabetics[*][*], and diet is a major cause of these conditions.
Genes also affect cholesterol levels. For example, people with an inherited condition called familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) typically have a total cholesterol level of 300 and often have a heart attack or stroke decades earlier than other people.[*] Those are examples. Live from the dangers of high cholesterol. .
Several other health conditions can raise or lower cholesterol levels. For example, hypothyroidism (low thyroid) can slow down the breakdown of LDL and slow down the rate at which your liver clears LDL particles and causes them to build up.[*]
Is Keto Bad For Your Heart?
In obese people and diabetics, keto generally improves heart disease risk factors such as LDL, HDL, TC, triglycerides, blood pressure, obesity and inflammation. Here are some examples:
However, for some people, LDL increases with the keto diet. These people are thin and non-diabetic.
For example, one study found that a three-week keto diet increased LDL cholesterol levels by 39 percent in young, healthy women.
We still don’t know the best diet for high cholesterol, but data suggests that keto can improve cholesterol profiles in obese and diabetic people. This is a promising drug-free treatment for this population.
Blood Lipid Changes With A Well Formulated Ketogenic Diet In Context
But what if your LDL goes up on keto? Some say don’t worry, other risk markers (like triglycerides or CRP) are more important. High cholesterol alone does not cause heart disease.
Maybe they’re right. We don’t have good long-term data on healthy people who develop high LDL on keto.
Among humans, it’s probably wise to be safe.
Keto is a high-fat diet. Because of this, transitioning to keto requires more butter, animal fat, coconut oil, and other sources of saturated fat than most people.
How Does The Ketogenic Diet Compare To Other Diets?
And as we’ve explained before, eating saturated fat can actually raise cholesterol levels.[*] This is why keto and high cholesterol often go hand in hand.
The best sources of monounsaturated fats are olives, avocados and nuts (macadamia nuts are especially high). Instead of a fatty ribeye, eat a chicken-spinach salad seasoned with olive oil. Instead of cooking with butter, you cook with avocado oil. You get the idea.
Fiber binds to cholesterol in the intestines, transports it through the stool and lowers cholesterol in the bloodstream. Healthy cholesterol levels without ketosis.
When you restrict carbohydrates, it keeps blood sugar and insulin levels low. This sends a signal to your body to burn fat and make ketones.
Modified Keto Diet
But low insulin has other effects. Unfortunately, one of them slows down the removal of LDL particles from the liver.[*] This can lead to higher LDL levels.
By stimulating insulin secretion, eating carbohydrates can help clear LDL quickly. You can cycle carbs (cyclic ketogenic diet) or simply increase your daily carbs until your cholesterol improves.
It is important to work with a registered healthcare professional to monitor your cholesterol levels as part of your daily routine. Because everyone is different, you know what works. One of the most controversial topics in diet and healthy living is still the ketogenic diet. A high-fat and low-carbohydrate diet has been a very successful tool for weight loss, metabolic changes and recovery in patients with, for example, epilepsy. But with all that fat, what happens to your cholesterol and can it be bad for your heart?
Because there isn’t much clinical evidence yet (although there is some!), it’s hard to know what the consequences of a high-fat diet might be on your cardiovascular system. He spoke to cardiologists, heart surgeons and a clinical nutritionist to find out what experts know now and how to follow a low-carb, low-fat diet without the deadly risk of heart disease.
