Diet Plan For 1200 Calories A Day – Dieting to lose weight can be so difficult, but it doesn’t have to be. You just need a plan. Knowing what you will eat, when and how to best plan your meals for the week sets you up for success. The plan I’m sharing today follows a 1,200 calorie meal plan for weight loss.
1,200 calories may not sound like much. If you’re eating a standard American diet, chances are you’re eating a lot more than that. But being mindful of the food you eat can actually be very satisfying, even more so than eating mountains of unhealthy, low-nutrient foods.
Diet Plan For 1200 Calories A Day
When you choose foods that are higher in protein and fat and lower in carbohydrates, you get fewer calories per meal. But lean protein and quality fat will still make you feel full when you’re done eating.
Day Macro Dieting Meal Plan
A low carb diet – which can mean MANY different things. But in general, this means less than 150 grams of carbohydrates per day.
Starch is higher in carbohydrates than other foods. Try to get the carbohydrates you eat from high-fiber foods. This means you get extra nutrients with your carbohydrates. Starches include grains such as bread, rice, pasta and quinoa, but also include starchy vegetables such as beans, peas, corn, sweet potatoes and potatoes.
Simple switches, like swapping out rice for brown rice, may be healthier in certain amounts, but won’t make a difference to your overall carb intake. Other changes need to be made. One thing to also note for vegetarians is that your protein sources also contain carbohydrates, such as black beans or veggie burger patties. Therefore, you need to look at macros differently to reduce your carb intake.

I was listening to a podcast this morning from a bodybuilding nutritionist who was asked how he can maintain his diet when he is in a calorie deficit.
I expected him to say bulk up on vegetables or low calorie foods, or supplement with diet soda, but he said something MUCH BETTER! (see my article: You can fill yourself up by eating less)
My paraphrase of what she said was: “You have to love your life between meals more than you love your food. If the BEST part of your day is oatmeal, then you need to make some changes.”
I couldn’t agree more and I love reframing this way. When I’m busy doing things I love and enjoy, I don’t have time to focus on food and I don’t care if what I eat is boring.
Quick And Simple Meal Prep
There is a time and a place to LOVE food. Of course there is. We all love food. But if you’re training for a bikini contest or dieting, find other things in life that fill the void. Don’t let it be your food.
My goal is always to hit 1200 calories a day, which gives me some wiggle room for impulsive, mindless eating. Generally I hit 1500 calories by the end of the day.
Regardless, I think it’s so helpful to have a plan for 1200 calories and let the rest of the food be unplanned. Although I don’t always eat the same thing every day, it’s usually a variation of these meals.
Anyway, this is just a quick example of what 1200 calories looks like on a typical day for me! These meals were eaten while watching Bright Line Eating last summer!
