“We know that diet pills and laxatives can be very harmful substances when used for weight control. “We wanted to know if these foods are a gateway that could lead to a diagnosis of binge eating,” said lead author S. Bryn Austin, professor in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the Harvard Chan School and STRIPED (Strategic Eating Disorders). “Our findings are consistent with what we know to be true about tobacco and alcohol: initiation of harmful substances can set young people on a path to increased problems, including serious substance use disorders.”

Using over-the-counter diet pills or laxatives is not recommended by health care providers as a healthy way to manage weight and can have serious health consequences, including high blood pressure and liver and kidney damage.

Researchers analyzed data from 10,058 women and girls aged 14 to 36 from the US Growing Up Today Study (GUTS) from 2001 to 2016.

Among participants without an eating disorder, 1.8% of those who used diet pills in the past year reported being diagnosed with an eating disorder for the first time in the following 1-3 years, compared to 1% of those who did not use the products. Among these participants, 4.2% of those who used laxatives for weight control also received their first diagnosis of an eating disorder, compared to 0.8% of those who did not use these products for weight control.

The researchers called for policies that would limit access to these products, including banning the sale of diet pills to minors. They wrote that the use of these weight management products can serve as a “gateway” to exacerbate disordered eating, dysregulate normal digestive function, and promote dependence on healthy and effective coping methods.

Diet Pills, Fat Burners, Herbal Tea — Why They Damage Our Health More Than Help Us Lose Weight

We routinely analyze products that we suspect contain active pharmaceutical ingredients that are not listed in the product information. We also report these products through our collaboration with drug regulatory authorities in other countries.

Thanks to this work, we became aware of several illegal weight loss products that contain the active ingredient sibutramine, which is not listed on the product label or packaging. Products sold on the Internet can often be dangerous to health, so we warn consumers against using them. Sibutramine is previously approved for the treatment of obesity, but it also causes some serious side effects, and all licensed medicines containing sibutramine were withdrawn from the market in 2010.

We do not know all the illegal weight loss products on the market and it is likely that there are other illegal and dangerous weight loss products in circulation; such products do not appear on the list of illegal weight loss products.
