To take it a step further, many experts advocate tracking macronutrients—the proportions of protein, fat, and carbohydrates in your diet—to help you make smarter food choices. For example, instead of just blindly reaching for a bag of chips, you need to consider how much of each macronutrient your snack provides, which can lead you to choose a more balanced snack.

While any food can fit into your macros, you have to focus on nutrients for your macros to go further. Balanced high-quality protein (think: lean meats, eggs, fish, and dairy) with fiber-rich carbohydrates (such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains) and healthy fats (nuts and avocados) will help you stay healthy longer. .

Starches are higher in carbohydrates than other foods. Starches include grains such as bread, rice, pasta and quinoa, but also starchy vegetables such as beans, peas, corn and potatoes.

The hardest part of cutting carbs is knowing what you can eat. It is important that any carbohydrates you consume are low in starch and nutrient dense.

Focus on getting your fiber from carbohydrates instead of sugar and starch. Green leafy vegetables and black beans are very high fiber foods.

When in doubt, choose a salad. We all know that green vegetables are good for us, and as an added bonus, we can eat more of them than any other food and we still keep them in calories. Stack the spinach in the salad. Sprinkle some cucumber, cherry tomatoes and chopped pecans on top. If you’re looking for a little extra protein, throw a lean meat like chicken in a skillet, add your favorite seasoning, and add to the meat pile!

After posting a “before and after weight loss” photo on Instagram, a reader asked how weighing and measuring food affected my relationship with food and what message it would send to the children in the family.

Honestly, I’ve never had an eating disorder, other than the typical overeating because I’m angry at the world, or because the food tastes good.

But after thinking about it, I realized that there is a big difference between weighing and measuring food, because you don’t have a good relationship with food, and you do it because you make sure you get all the nutrients you need.

When it comes to healthy eating, I believe your motivations define your relationship with food. Since I’m now focused on a performance goal (building muscle and running fast), I want every ounce of protein, and every gram of carbs my body needs for fuel. I also don’t want to eat because the weight gain also limits my ability to run fast and see muscle.

Day Meal Plan {1200 Calories And 100+ Grams Protein Per Day}

I think food relationships can get complicated when the goal is based on aesthetics. Instead of eating to exercise, you try to control your appearance, which is a losing battle, and one that cannot be measured.

Currently, my macro goals are set by my coach, Shane Heugly. I’m running another fitness competition in 2021, so I hired him to help me get back on stage with more muscle. . (To calculate your own macros, use my macro calculator here!)

Shane had me eat 150 grams of protein, 150 grams of carbs and 40 grams of protein [225 grams of carbs per week, although I didn’t include that in the plan].
