Carbohydrates can be confusing for many people. To follow a good diet for gestational diabetes, you need to understand a little about carbohydrates and where to find them.

Not knowing which foods and beverages are high in carbohydrates can be detrimental to blood sugar control, and while most people know that sugar needs to be cut from their gestational diabetes diet, many do not. Don’t know if carbs are a problem too.

Calorie Diabetic Diet: The Beginner’s Guide To Reduced Calorie Meal Plans

Carbs are converted to glucose in the bloodstream (so carbs are a lot of sugar as far as we’re concerned) and eating anything high in carbs will raise your blood sugar. Another problem is that some carbohydrates can turn into glucose too quickly in the bloodstream. You can see it as the red line in the image below…

Eliminating carbohydrates from the diet or severely limiting them will lower blood sugar levels, but the problem is that it puts the body into a state of ketosis, burning fat instead of glucose for energy. You may also feel lethargic.

The problem with burning fat instead of glucose is that during pregnancy, the body produces acids called ketones, which can be harmful to the growing baby if they are produced in excess.

It is therefore important to continue to eat small amounts of carbohydrates at each meal and stay well hydrated wherever possible. You can read more about ketosis on our page about ketones.

Carbohydrates can be found in most foods and beverages. Carbohydrates are made up of three different things: sugar, starch, and fiber.

There are different types of carbohydrates and this is where it can get very confusing as many people only think of carbohydrates as bread, pasta and rice etc but carbohydrates can also be found in the following products:

Simple carbohydrates are broken down and digested very quickly, which means they can raise blood sugar levels very quickly and often have a sweet taste. Simple carbohydrates occur naturally in many foods:

Starch is a complex carbohydrate consisting of sugar units linked together. Starch occurs naturally in vegetables, grains, and cooked dried beans and peas. Complex carbohydrates come in two types:

Prediabetes Diet Plan: 1,500 Calories

Refined Complex Carbohydrates – When a complex carbohydrate is refined, it is processed and much of the fiber and beneficial substances are removed, for example white flour.

Unrefined complex carbohydrates – therefore, unrefined carbohydrates are carbohydrates that are in their natural state and contain a lot of goodness, e.g. Whole wheat flour

For better blood sugar levels, we need to choose unrefined complex carbohydrates that contain more of the good stuff, such as brown and whole grains…

Vegetables vary in their carbohydrate content, with sweet, starchy vegetables such as carrots and sweet corn being higher in carbohydrates and green leafy vegetables being lower in carbohydrates.

Many foods and beverages are mixtures of macronutrients, so it can be confusing. For example, yogurt contains carbohydrates from lactose, fat, and protein.

Most Common Low Carb Mistakes (and How To Avoid Them)

The best products to help with a gestational diabetes diet and lower blood sugar would be products that are low in carbohydrates and high in fat and protein.

We often see moms confused as to why a breakfast of cereal, skimmed milk and a banana with a small glass of orange juice results in high blood sugar. So let’s check out these tips…

Orange juice = simple carbohydrates (from the fructose in the fruit, juicing also means the fruit breaks down more and the sugars will be easier to absorb).

Carbohydrates are converted to glucose in the bloodstream, so you’re basically eating sugar + sugar + sugar, a refined sugar drink = massive spike in blood sugar! However, you may see a crash at very low levels, which could be a sign that you hit a spike and crash.

One method often used in diabetes nutrition counseling is carbohydrate counting. Here, a measured amount of carbohydrates is consumed for each meal and snack.

Carbohydrate counting works to some extent and can give good portion size guidance for carbohydrate intake, but it can also mean that you limit some carbohydrates too much and allow yourself to tolerate others. Forcing, which may mean that you increase the medication or your diet, so you can eat. A certain amount of carbohydrates.

Type 1 diabetics use carbohydrate counts to calculate insulin doses compared to carbohydrates eaten, but because insulin resistance in gestational diabetes fluctuates with pregnancy hormones, insulin doses Can make judging difficult. This can lead to unstable blood sugar levels and other hypos.

The main reason we don’t advocate a carb count is that everyone is different in terms of which starchy complex carbohydrates they tolerate best.

Goal Of A Diabetes Diet Plan

A person will tolerate whole grain rice better than whole grain bread or whole grain pasta. Another person may tolerate potatoes better than whole grain rice.

Once you are diagnosed with gestational diabetes, start trying different starchy complex carbohydrates in different foods to see what readings you get. In addition to your readings, it is recommended that you keep a food diary that you can refer back to.

Trial and error with starchy complex carbohydrates is the best approach when starting out, so try others and keep a food diary in addition to your readings.

Based on your readings, increase carbs by small amounts so you’re comfortably within your blood sugar target and reduce or eliminate carbs you don’t tolerate.

There are things you can do to slow the release of glucose from carbohydrates into the bloodstream. you can do

Eating carbohydrates with protein and natural fats will slow stomach emptying and glucose release, meaning you’re less likely to spike your blood sugar levels too much.

” means you always include protein and natural fats, eg. A slice of Bergen soy and flaxseed bread (one of our better recommended breads) will raise your blood sugar if eaten with just butter. Protein and Adding peanut butter or eggs to natural fats will slow glucose absorption and improve blood sugar levels.

Another example is an apple. Granny Smith apples are better for blood sugar levels because they are less sweet than other varieties. By itself, it’s just a simple carbohydrate that can raise blood sugar levels. Dip an apple in peanut or nut butter and you have a great snack!

Different types of carbohydrates are digested in the body at different rates, which affects blood glucose levels. The glycemic index (GI) is a ranking system used to measure how quickly these foods cause a rise (or spike) in blood glucose after eating.

Low GI foods should be used to help make better choices when choosing carbohydrates to eat, so we recommend replacing high GI foods with low GI ones for a better gestational diabetes diet.
