If you struggle with thrush — or have a persistent, recurring candida overgrowth — you’ve probably tried the candida diet. I bet it worked too. However, people often end the Candida diet and go back to eating as before.
The Candida Crusher Diet
The candida diet is a low-sugar anti-inflammatory diet that aims to eliminate the sugars that fuel candida overgrowth. It focuses on non-starchy vegetables like asparagus, bean sprouts, beets, cruciferous vegetables (broccoli and cauliflower), leafy greens… the list goes on. However, some foods are allowed in the Candida diet that are difficult for some people, such as nightshade vegetables, legumes and corn. That’s why I developed an anti-candida regimen.
I’ll tell you which foods are the strongest candida killers on an anti-candida diet, why you should avoid certain foods that are allowed in a traditional candida diet, and tell you all about mine. – Step solution, to fight Candida overgrowth. Before doing that, let’s do a quick review of candida overgrowth.
Candida is a fungus, a type of yeast that lives in small amounts in the mouth and intestines. Its function is to aid digestion and absorption of nutrients. It’s part of your body’s normal microflora – the microorganisms that live in delicate balance in your mouth, throat, intestines, female genitalia and on your skin.
Meanwhile, your good bacteria, bad bacteria and candida (among yeasts, viruses and even other species) that make up your gut microbiome exist in a balanced state. In fact, I like to think of the gut microbiome as a rainforest, with many different species living in harmony. When a species goes out of balance in its rainforest, everything spirals out of control. When this balance is upset between Candida and other microorganisms, Candida overgrowth occurs.
The Candida Diet: Separating Fact From Fiction
Candidiasis, or yeast overgrowth, is very common and causes Candida overgrowth symptoms such as bloating, constipation, itchiness, yeast infections, fatigue, nausea, and mood swings. Candida can grow in your mouth, however, it usually grows too large in your intestines. When it is overproduced there, it breaks down the intestinal wall, causing leaky gut.
If you have food particles, including intestinal yeast, Candida, and other toxins, they can enter your bloodstream directly. Once in the bloodstream, these particles can reach any part of your body. Your immune system labels them as invaders and attacks them, causing your inflammatory response — including the production of white blood cells — to go into high gear. Your body is great at dealing with acute inflammation.
Candida overgrowth is one of the most common conditions I see in my clinic, especially in autoimmune patients. I’ve seen thousands of people suffer from digestive issues, fatigue, mental confusion, recurring yeast infections, skin problems, mood swings and more – all caused by Candida overgrowth.

My Candida Diet Experience
Treating Candida overgrowth is simply stopping the growth with an anti-Candida regimen. It also means restoring the friendly bacteria that normally keep them in check so they don’t come back. I’m going to talk more about the candida diet in just a moment. Following an anti-candida diet, along with my proven three-step approach, can help repair your gut so the overgrowth can no longer enter your bloodstream.
Refined carbohydrates and fermented foods. For this reason, you will eliminate all gluten, sugar, refined carbohydrates, alcohol, dried fruit, fruit juice and fermented foods as part of your anti-candida diet. Fermented foods not only feed good bacteria, they also feed Candida. I also recommend limiting grains and cereals to 1 cup a day or eliminating them from your diet entirely.
Once you’ve eliminated toxic and inflammatory foods from your anti-candida diet, you’ll want to attack candida by taking supplements that help break down the cell wall of yeast cells. I use Candefense® and also Caprylic Acid. Candefense® supports microbial balance in the GI tract and promotes yeast growth, while caprylic acid helps penetrate intestinal mucosal cells to affect yeast. Both Candefense® and Caprylic Acid are excellent at helping to break down Candida cell walls and are the strongest Candida killers I have on hand.
The final step to an anti-candida diet is to repopulate your gut with good bacteria using a high-potency probiotic to keep candida in check. In addition to eliminating toxic and inflammatory foods, an anti-candida diet focuses on increasing your intake of foods that are known to be strong candida killers, reducing candida overgrowth. Here are 10 foods I recommend to fight candida overgrowth and restore the balance between good and bad bacteria in your gut microbiome.
Coconut oil is a great food to add to your anti-candida diet because it naturally contains capric acid and lauric acid, which promote gut health. These antifungal fatty acids inhibit the growth of Candida and cause it to die, making holes in its cell wall. Capric acid, also known as caprylic acid, is fast and effective at killing Candida overgrowth, making it the most powerful Candida killer. That’s why caprylic acid is the main ingredient in my anti-candida supplements.
Apple cider vinegar is one type of vinegar allowed on an anti-candida diet. Most vinegars are made from alcohol or grains. Apple cider vinegar originates from apples or, more precisely, apple cider. Research shows that apple cider vinegar can damage Candida cell walls and protein structures.
Garlic has a long history as one of the strongest candida killers. This herb contains allicin, a compound that has natural antifungal properties that inhibit the growth and reproduction of Candida cells. The best way to reap the benefits of garlic is to add the freshly picked raw ingredient to your anti-candida diet.

Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, arugula, cabbage and radishes are among the most powerful candida-killing foods. They contain isothiocyanates, which are sulfur and nitrogen containing compounds that inhibit Candida growth. Its antibacterial properties also support a healthy balance of bacteria.
Olive, safflower, avocado and evening primrose oils contain polyphenols, which fight free radicals that can help your body fight Candida. Oleic acid, the main fatty acid in olive and avocado oils, supports the immune system and promotes a healthy inflammatory response.
Ginger contains ginger and sugar. Fighting inflammation, the antifungal ingredients in ginger root support a healthy balance of bacteria to eliminate Candida overgrowth. Ginger isn’t the strongest candida killer of the bunch, but it does increase your levels of glutathione, which is your body’s natural detoxifier.

Lemon is a popular antifungal food that can kill Candida. Lemon is a well-known antioxidant food. Lemon works primarily by cleansing the liver as it fights Candida. Lemon juice also stimulates the peristaltic action of the intestines, increasing its effectiveness as another powerful candida killer to eliminate candida overgrowth.
Wild-caught salmon is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, which have antifungal properties and support a healthy inflammatory response. Omega-3s work together with the immune system to promote a healthy intestinal lining. I recommend buying wild-caught seafood over farm-raised fish when you can.
Anti Inflammatory Candida Diet Recipes
As I mentioned earlier, the candida diet is a low-sugar anti-inflammatory diet that aims to eliminate the sugars that fuel candida overgrowth. However, the Candida diet allows for many foods that can be nauseating for some people. Therefore, an anti-Candida diet is necessary.
A traditional Candida diet includes dark leafy greens (eggplant, tomatoes, and peppers), vegetables, some dairy products, and “gluten-free” grains. Many people are allergic to this food. If you suspect you have an allergy to these foods, I recommend going on a 30-day elimination diet and reintroducing these foods one at a time and tracking your symptoms.
