The anti-candida diet is a low-sugar, anti-inflammatory diet designed to eliminate sugars that contribute to the overgrowth of candidiasis. The focus is on non-starchy vegetables like asparagus, bean sprouts, beets, cruciferous vegetables (broccoli and cauliflower), leafy greens… the list goes on. However, there are some foods that are allowed on the Candida Diet that can be problematic for some people, such as vegetables, legumes, and corn. That’s why I created the Candida Diet.

Candida is a fungus, a form of yeast, that lives in small amounts in the mouth and intestines. Its job is to aid digestion and absorption of nutrients. It’s part of your body’s normal microflora – microorganisms that live in delicate balance in your mouth, throat, intestines, vagina in women, and on your skin.
Ideally, your good bacteria, bad bacteria, and candida (among other forms of yeast, viruses, and even mites) that make up your gut microbiome exist in a balanced state. In fact, I like to think of the gut microbiome as a rainforest where many different species live together in harmony. When one species in your rainforest is out of balance, everything is out of control. When the balance between candida and other microorganisms is disturbed, candida overgrowth occurs.

Candidiasis, or yeast overgrowth, is very common and causes candida overgrowth symptoms such as bloating, constipation, rashes, yeast infections, fatigue, brain fog, and mood swings. Candida can grow in the mouth, but is more common in the intestines. When there is too much of it, it breaks down your intestinal wall and causes a leaky gut.
If you have a leaky gut, candidiasis and other toxins, including food particles, can enter your bloodstream directly. Once in the bloodstream, these particles can reach any part of the body. Your immune system labels them as invaders and attacks, triggering an inflammatory response, including white blood cell production, at full blast. Your body is great at dealing with acute inflammation.
Candida overgrowth is one of the most common conditions I see in my clinic, especially among patients with autoimmune diseases. I have seen thousands of people with digestive problems, fatigue, brain fog, recurring yeast infections, skin problems, mood swings, and more caused by Candida overgrowth.

Refined carbohydrates and products containing yeast. For this reason, as part of an anti-candida diet, you will eliminate all gluten, sugar, refined carbohydrates, alcohol, dried fruits, fruit juices, and fermented foods from your diet. Fermented foods not only feed the good bacteria, but also Candida. I also recommend limiting legumes and grains to 1 cup a day or eliminating them from your diet entirely.
Once you’ve eliminated toxic and inflammatory foods from your anti-candida diet, you’ll want to attack candida by taking supplements that help break down the yeast cell wall. Coconut oil is a great product to add to an anti-candida diet because it naturally contains capric and lauric acids, which promote gut health. These antifungal fatty acids kill Candida overgrowth and reproduction by making holes in its cell wall, causing it to die. Capric acid, also known as caprylic acid, quickly and effectively eliminates candida overgrowth, making it one of the most powerful candida killers. This is why the main ingredient in one of my candidiasis supplements is caprylic acid.
Apple cider vinegar is the only type of vinegar allowed on the Candida diet. Most vinegars are made from alcohol or grains. Apple cider vinegar is derived from apples, or more specifically cider. Studies show that apple cider vinegar can damage Candida cell walls and protein structures.
Garlic has a long history as one of the most powerful candidiasis killers. This plant contains allicin, a compound with natural antifungal properties that inhibits the growth and reproduction of Candida cells. The best way to reap the benefits of garlic is to add the freshly minced raw ingredient to your anti-candida diet.

Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, arugula, cabbage, and radishes are among the most powerful candidiasis-killing foods. They contain isothiocyanates, which are compounds that contain sulfur and nitrogen and inhibit the growth of Candida. Their antibacterial properties also support a healthy balance of bacteria.
Olive, linseed, avocado, and evening primrose oils all contain polyphenols, which are free radical scavengers and may help the body fight candida. Oleic acid, the main fatty acid in olive and avocado oils, supports your immune system and promotes a healthy inflammatory response.
Ginger contains gingerols and shogaols. These anti-inflammatory and antifungal ingredients in ginger root support a healthy balance of bacteria to help eliminate Candida overgrowth. Ginger isn’t the strongest candida killer of all, but it does increase levels of glutathione, which is your body’s natural detoxifier.
Cinnamon is a natural spice that promotes a healthy inflammatory response and also has antifungal properties. Like caprylic acid, cinnamon damages yeast cells, killing them and eventually causing them to die. Cinnamon is a useful spice to include in an anti-candida diet.

As I mentioned earlier, the anti-candida diet is an anti-inflammatory, low-sugar diet designed to eliminate the sugars that promote candida overgrowth. However, the anti-candida diet allows for many foods that can cause inflammation in some people. That is why an anti-candida diet is necessary.
The traditional candidiasis diet includes nightshade vegetables (eggplants, tomatoes, and peppers), legumes, some dairy products, and gluten-free cereals. Many people are sensitive to these products. If you suspect you are sensitive to these foods, I recommend following a 30-day elimination diet and then reintroducing these foods one at a time and monitoring your symptoms.
