I continued my quest to learn more about fitness by following experts, reading scientific studies and listening to podcasts. What I’ve seen is that proponents of the ketogenic diet promise the health benefits of this low-carbohydrate diet.
Although the ketogenic diet can provide rapid weight loss in the short term, scientific studies have not shown the superiority of reducing carbohydrates for long-term fat loss (references listed below or click directly on the papers here: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5). But honest foodies say it’s better than what they’ve tried.
Keto Success Story
The ketogenic diet is gaining popularity in the cancer research industry – especially brain research (6). Last year, I traveled to New Orleans to attend the annual meeting of the Society of Neuro-Oncology (SNO). The ketogenic diet was one of the hot topics at the conference. Although I haven’t seen any solid data, there are some promising results.
I didn’t want to knock it without trying, so I decided to put myself on a ketogenic diet for four weeks as an experiment. I want to see firsthand how well this recipe works for so many people.
Although I advocate a simple diet, I have done my best as much as possible. I have no affiliation or financial interest in posting any food. I’m willing to go on a keto bike if that’s what I want.
A ketogenic diet is a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet. It was originally used as a medicine to treat epileptic seizures in children. This diet encourages the body to use fat as its main energy source rather than carbohydrates.
How I Lost 10 Lbs In 8 Weeks!
When you eat carbohydrates, they are converted into glucose molecules, which are used for energy and brain function. However, in the absence of carbohydrates, the liver converts fat molecules into ketone bodies to replace the work of glucose.
Prolonged intake of very low amounts of carbohydrates leads to elevated levels of ketones in the bloodstream, a state known as ketosis. Epileptic patients have fewer seizures when in ketosis (7). However, in recent years, the ketogenic diet has been promoted as a solution to weight problems.
Low-carbohydrate diets are promoted as long-term weight loss diets. Over the past 50 years, low-carbohydrate diets such as the Atkins Diet, Dukan Diet, South Beach Diet, Paleo Diet, and Ketogenic Diet have been the most popular weight loss diets. People swear by these diets and aren’t shy about sharing their double- or triple-digit weight loss results.
The idea behind these diets is that insulin is a carbohydrate of fat (8). This model points the finger at insulin as the main cause of fat gain, and suggests that long-term maintenance of low insulin release by reducing intake of fat, the body does not become fat. This model hypothesizes that calorie balance is the most important factor in weight gain and obesity (9).

If low carb diets aren’t good, how come thousands of people who have lost weight say they can’t lose weight on a low fat diet? This is an important issue, and I wanted to experience the ketogenic diet first to understand it for myself.
